Overview

Join the Hidden Craters Hike for a Big Island off-road climb and hike up the cool and misty slopes of Hualalai volcano. 4 Wheel Drive vans carry you up most of the way to 6,000 feet (1,800 meters) elevation before you begin your on-foot ascent to visit a surreal scene of lava flows and a forest full of native birdsong. This adventure tour teaches you all about the best of Kona!

  • Hawaii Forest and Trail

    Travelers must meet at our Kailua-Kona Headquarters to check-in 15 minutes prior to the tour departure. Restrooms are available. Travel time to trailhead is approximately 30 minutes.

    Venture onto private land behind 3 locked gates to explore the upper slopes of Kona’s very own volcano – Hualalai. This journey provides intimate, unique access to volcanic sites and stunning vista views along your 4 mile hike.

When you are here, do not miss the hidden crater hike of Kona

This was most extraordinary hike to experience a most extraordinary and complex, diverse and spectacular mountain with a knowledgeable passionate guide, Mel, I learned so much and grew so much in my understanding of Hualalai for my work on the Kona Airport mural. I would highly recommend this hike to anyone who can make the hike because it's so surprising so diverse and such a phenomenal experience.

30 years of tours- they know what they’re doing !

30 years of guided tours - it shows ! Wonderful tour with Garry who clearly loves what he does . Hiking through volcanic rock paths, peering over crater rims, squeezing through a lava tube and descending through a rain forest with a group of 10. His personal knowledge and passion of trees, flowers and birds added to an informative tour. Highly recommend!

Amazing views! The guide Matteo incredibly knowledgeable about the history, culture and nature that make Kona so amazing. Incredibly safe even though the roads were rough, the guide was a great driver.

We often hike the Makaula O'oma Trail and its a treat. The crater hike is further up the mountain into a protected area that only Hawaii Forest & Trail have permission to enter so that makes it special. I have said this before, I have had good experiences with guides, usually they have been on the islands a few years and have learned enough to do the tour. Hawaii Forest & Trail guides are entirely on another level. The 3 guides I have been with have all been on the island for decades and are devoted (fanatic) experts on all things Hawaiian. Our guide Mel(lanie) exemplified this. The hike itself wasn't that difficult, even for an old large guy like me. There were many things to stop and look at so there were no long slogs. It of course helped that we had perfect clear weather all day.

Great small group hiking tour

We really enjoyed this hiking tour. It was great to be in a small group with a knowledgeable guide who took us onto private property to explore a volcano, a lava tube, and some of the local bush and wildlife. The stunning views across the ocean to the other islands and of Kona made it even more special. It was a good option for something a bit more adventurous on our holiday.
