Our son celebrated his 16th birthday with an unforgettable excursion and once-in-a-lifetime kaiseki lunch organized by Daisuke and Umeseko Tour. We were originally booked for an e-bike tour, but Daisuke made alternative arrangements due to forecasted rain and lightning. His communications with us were prompt and informative.
We started with a tour of the quaint town Hida Hagiwara, where we visited a beautiful temple, then sampled delicious, locally made foods: amazake (sweet, non-alcoholic rice drink) at the sake brewery, two different types of miso, a hot-and-crunchy-from-the-fryer croquette, and refreshing sweet jelly. We were the only tourists in town, and we would never have known without Dai's help how to find or what to order at these lovely local establishments.
Afterwards, we were driven to a beautiful, elegant ryokan in a nearby mountain village, where we enjoyed an exquisitely prepared and presented kaiseki lunch. Each course featured organic, local, seasonal vegetables and fish from nearby mountain streams. Absolutely the best meal we’ve ever had in Japan! My son was also surprised with a special birthday dessert, accompanied by a birthday song. ;-) After lunch, we visited the farm down the road where 95% of the ryokan’s vegetables are grown. Four pairs of boots were all ready for us to admire the farm’s bountiful harvest: eggplant, shiso, carrots, cucumbers, squash, corn, pepper, and much more. We felt honored to receive the generous, warm hospitality and kindness of the multi-generational family that runs the ryokan.
Much gratitude and appreciation to Daisuke for his expert, friendly guidance. Our sons especially enjoyed learning about his interesting background and ambitions for the future. Thank you for ensuring that we will never forget my son’s 16th birthday and a very beautiful part of Japan!
