Overview

This is a private sake brewery tour dedicated for small groups who want to escape from tourist crowds to have the authentic sake experience, including a leisurely town walk and sake tasting. The tour is held at the small country town named Hagiwara, which is near from Takayama but definitely no tourist here. You can enjoy understanding the sake brewing process and the beautiful sake tasting at your own pace without any stress. On the way to the Tenryo Sake Brewery, your guide will share not only the introduction of sake but the historical background of town. Inside the brewery, you will understand the brewing process of sake step by step with seeing the actual facilities and machines for production. Afterward, you will taste various excellent sake of Tenryo (天領) to enjoy the difference of flavors, and you can know a lot of useful tips to drink and order sake. If you love sake, please do not miss this opportunity!

    *In April 2023, we have amended the tour length from 1.5 to 2 hours, which makes price difference. The Hida region is well known as one of the best places to make sake in Japan since we have all 3 key factors for brewing: water, rice and coldness. Tenryo Sake Brewery started in Edo period (17C) and now it is representative of sake breweries in this region. They have won lots of awards not only in Japan, but in overseas and it is served in some high-class Japanese-style restaurants. At the brewery, you will see the inside to know more about ingredients of sake and the brewing process step by step. After the special experience, you will enjoy Tenryo’s sake. Depending on the season, they will offer you their best sake and you can find your favorite one. You can also understand the difference of flavors and how to drink sake.

  • Participants can bring and store suitcases inside of our garage during the tour so that they can directly head to the next destination such as Kyoto or Tokyo just after the tour

  • If it is canceled due to poor weather, you will be offered a different date or a full refund
  • The specific departure point is Hida-Hagiwara station, and your guide will pick you up at the station before the tour starting time
  • Please directly contact us via our website "UMESEKO TOUR" if the date you want to book is not available on the calendar
  • No refund or no alternative date will be given when you do not show up at the meeting time for any reason (meeting time is 10 minutes before start time of tour)
  • Minimum drinking age is 20 years
  • You can join with your child but he/she is not allowed to drink sake

We came from Spain. We are sake lovers. We always wanted to visit a sake brewery where we could see the whole process. Mr. Dai is very professional and he loves what he does. He explained the history of sake, and all its processes in great detail. He answered all our questions. The brewery staff was very attentive in everything. Highly recomended.

Best sake tour in Japan

Dai is delightful and fluent in English and he explained life in rural Japan as well as the Sake process and qualifications so well. We now really understand more about rural Japan (amazing) what we love drinking. We were only sad that we did not know he will also take you on a bike tour. If you can- enjoy both as this area is part of the Japanese countryside- similar to riding in Swiss alps. Just gorgeous.
