Overview

Taste the vibrant cuisine of Mexico like a local on this private tour of Guadalajara’s Mercado Libertad, the largest indoor market in Latin America. Follow your guide through the many indoor streets to discover more than 500 stalls offering hidden culinary gems. Try local specialities like barbacoa, tortas ahogadas and birria, and learn about Guadalajara’s rich food heritage. Additionally, you will get to admire the fundamental city landmarks and historic sites such as the Cathedral and Teatro Degollado.   • Mercado San Juan de Dios

    This gigantic market is vibrant! Explore its three floors bursting with sights, sounds, and enticing aromas. Be prepared for a sensory overload of colorful crafts, fresh produce, and delicious food stalls, a fully-immersive experience of engagement with Guadalajara's working-class culture. Since this is a private tour -just for you and your companions- we can go at our own pace. Make sure to bring cash in Mxn pesos so you can get whatever you like (ATMs available if needed). There is an endless diversity of souvenirs and handicrafts, and we can take as long as you whish to buy anything you need. As part of the culinary experience we will try: 1. Tortas ahogadas: a tomato salsa-drowned pork sandwich. 2. tacos de barbacoa: slow-cooked marinated beef, served in grilled tacos. 3. Tejuino: a cold beverage made from fermented corn. 4. Artisanal candies and/or seasonal fruits. * VE, VG choices are available upon request, simply let me know via message after booking the tour.

    On our journey from the market to the birria restaurant, we'll spend 1-hour exploring Guadalajara's iconic landmarks and architectural treasures. Highlights include the majestic Teatro Degollado, the historic Founders Plaza, the city's first Franciscan Mission, the grand Palacio de Gobierno, and the stunning 16th-century Cathedral with its lively surrounding squares. This experience will immerse you in the city's rich history and vibrant culture. As we stroll, I’ll share insightful context that will deepen your understanding of Guadalajara’s rich history, its evolving present, and the challenges shaping its future. Keep in mind, this is a private tour, so we can pause anytime to take a break, enjoy a coffee or ice cream, and capture as many photos as you'd like.

  • Nueve Esquinas

    This plaza connects nine streets and is home to the city's oldest restaurants. The house specialty at Nueve Esquinas is birria, a juicy and delicious hearty meat stew, served with hand-made tortillas, cilantro, onions, lemon and salsa. Before concluding the tour, I’ll be happy to share personalized recommendations for activities, restaurants, bars, and fascinating areas of the city to explore further.

This was an excellent food and historical tour of Centro. Diego was a great tour guide and we even added a seafood stop on our tour. Overall, I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Guadalajara.

My husband and I had a great food tour with our guide Diego. He is very knowledgeable about the history of Guadalajara. He took us through the large market where we experienced a cultural assortment of food and goods. Diego was a pleasure to have as a guide.

We had a fantastic time with Diego on this tour! He met us at our hotel and took us to the San Juan de Dios market. Diego has a deep love for Guadalajara and shared a lot of history and local color. The market is amazing — huge, colorful, and bustling, with all kinds of food and merchandise. We ate some of the most delicious food! The barbacoa tacos and torta ahogada were both wonderful, so tasty and made with love by some of the best vendors in the market. Diego also helped us shop for a few items we wanted, like boots and Christmas ornaments. His knowledge of the market, both its history and the vendors, must be unparalleled. We walked to lunch after the market and had a wonderful time eating birria and a local restaurant, capping off a great tour. We would highly recommend this tour with Diego!

Diego shared some fantastic places to eat authentic Mexican food. I loved tacos at Felippes for breakfast and unbelievable ceviche at another stall in Mercado Libertad. The highlight was lunch of traditional Birria in a beautiful old hacienda El Pilón de Los Arrieros. It was so good we went back for dinner the next night!! Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge on historical sites we visited along the way.
