We had a fantastic time on our tour, which we booked through Viator. It included Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, and the Trolley. It was the PERFECT way to experience the falls on the American side (even though we were staying on the Canadian side!). Yes, you can probably do it all on your own. But I liked knowing it was booked and that I had tickets. Plus, we learned things from the tour guide that we probably would not have known otherwise. The tour guide first walked us to the Maid of the Mist, then took us to the trolley, and we were on our own from there to see Cave of the Winds and explore the rest of the park. It was a perfect balance of having a tour, but being on your own schedule. Highly recommend!!
