Overview

This is the longest-running northern lights photo tour in the Anchorage area. We pick you up at your Anchorage accommodations and take you on a nocturnal adventure to witness the beauty of the Alaskan night sky. It's a great option for any travelers to Alaska during August to late April. This tour accommodates serious photographers to sightseers. We conduct a daily update that includes both the aurora borealis and weather forecast. The tour runs based on that forecast, but runs only if the forecast indicates a chance of seeing the aurora. Because both weather and the aurora borealis are natural phenomena, we cannot guarantee seeing the northern lights. This tour increases your chance of aurora viewing success by allowing you to reserve as many nights as you like [space available] and only finalizing payment 48 hours in advance under the Reserve Now & Pay Later system. If you do not see the northern lights during your tour, you get a free make-up tour.

Pickup details

We pick up at hotels within the city of Anchorage. We also may possibly pick up at an Airbnb if it is not too far off our typical route within Anchorage. To be clear, we DO NOT pick up at the Alyeska Resort or any other lodging in Girdwood. We ... also cannot guarantee pick up in Eagle River. Travelers staying in those areas will be directed to meet at a designated location in Anchorage. Timing of pick up will depend upon how many travelers are on the tour that evening, and how cloud cover affects our tour route for the night. A schedule is sent out the day of the tour with times and locations for pick up. Pick up times for this tour have varied from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. Read more ▼

Itinerary

Chugach State Park

One potential stop during this tour is the Glen Alps trailhead, were we will walk on a short trail to an overlook of the city and a wide view to the north.

A possible stop along the tour is the Mt. Baldy trailhead, which provides high elevation, expansive views of the north.

We will spend most of our time in the area of Palmer, visiting locations from the Knik River to Hatcher Pass Management Area.

Spectacular lights viewing, great guide

Ben was the guide on New Year's Eve, and the evening was lovely! He helped with figuring out how to take photos, and provided a tripod (even though I didn't request one in advance). Ben took us to his favorite beauty wilderness spots, and we saw an epic display. I'd booked a 4-night tour, but ended up only going the first night because it was so good, and also it was very cold. Standing there in the cold takes it out of you, so make sure your gear is good. I didn't realize my snow boots were failing until that night, and it was a bummer to have cold feet. But the tour was excellent and well worth the money.

Great tour, well run company

Chad and Ben did a great job locating a remote and picturesque spot to view and photograph the aurora. What sets Alaska Photo Treks apart is their "Go/No go" policy and communications. They don't want to waste the time or money of customers if the probability of seeing is low. Anna (office manager) is fabulous and a great communicator. To make sure she reached us she texted and called (when there was an urgent update). We have been on 5 different aurora photo chases and we can highly recommend Alaska Photo Treks. Its a very well run company.
