Overview

The experience of watching 40 foot (12 meter) whales from a 24 foot (7 meter) Zodiac raft is something you'll never forget! Following Hawaiian Marine Park laws of stopping at least 100 yards (90 meters) away from these magnificent animals, you get a close up look at the migrating humpback whales. It is not uncommon for them to be curious about the raft and come right under the boat!

Meeting points

Captain Zodiac is located at 74-425 Kealakehe Parkway, suite #16. We are in the Honokohau Marina and small boat harbor located approximately 5 miles south of the Kona Airport and approximately 2 miles north of the town of Kailua-Kona. Meet at our office in the Gentry's Kona Marina parking lot.

Itinerary

Join us for an adventure to see our seasonal Humpback whales as they come home to Hawaii to calf and mate during the winter months. Our twin powered Zodiac boats can cover lots of ground as we leave the harbor and venture out to find these majestic beauties. Scanning the horizon for any blows, splashes, or flukes as your captain will engage all guests with an informative narrative about the Humpback whales. Bring along any camera you have to take breath taking photographs from 100 yards away. Relax for a short snack break when you have a chance to because the whales always seem to know when the cameras are down. Its a three hour tour but packed full of action from start to finish.

The trip was wonderful from start to finish. Marco was our captain assisted by Liz. Marco was so very knowledgeable and interactive with the group. I highly recommend Captain Zodiac and hopefully you will be with this team!!!!!

Amazing whale watching

We had an amazing afternoon chasing whales with Captain Zodiac! Brit and Jason were great, and they were very informative and kept everyone engaged during the times we didn’t see whales.

Almost immediately out of the marina, we started seeing whale activity- spouting and fin flips. During the course of our adventure, we saw whale breaches, a whale “heat wave”, a mega pod of spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and even a few turtles. We had a beautiful day! I was struck by the magic of being in such close proximity to our ocean mammals and the desire to protect and conserve their presence and gifts for generations to come. We would also like to add a big Mahalo to our captain & 1st mate, who did a super job spotting and navigating.

Absolutely amazing experience! Marco and Shelby were wonderful guides. We saw whales, dolphins, and manta rays! Shelby even jumped into the water with her go pro to get awesome videos of the manta rays that she shared with us after. Highly HIGHLY recommend! The boat is so close to the water without you getting very wet at all! One of my favorite experiences in Hawaii!

Brit and Jason were amazing! We saw so many whales and they knew just where to go. We even got footage of a mom & calf underwater since it got so close to our boat so bring a gopro. I wish I could upload the videos on here. The zodiac raft is fast and bumpy, but we felt safe nonetheless. Highly recommend!
