Overview

Begin with a visit to Chillon Castle, located on the shores of Lake Geneva near Montreux, Switzerland. Explore this historic fortress with its stunning architecture, beautiful views of the lake, and fascinating medieval history. After exploring the castle, head to your first winery. Depending on your location, you can choose from various wineries around Lake Geneva or in the nearby Lavaux region, known for its terraced vineyards and excellent wines. Spend some time touring the winery, learning about the winemaking process, and, of course, indulging in wine tasting sessions. Swiss wines, including Chasselas, Pinot Noir, and Gamay, are particularly noteworthy. Continue your wine tour by visiting two more wineries in the area.

  • Chateau de Chillon

    Chillon Castle in its current form is the result of several centuries of construction and redevelopment. The excavations carried out from the end of the 19th century, particularly those led by archaeologist Albert Naef (1862-1936), indicate that the site has been occupied since the Bronze Age. The rocky island on which the castle sits constituted both a form of natural protection and a strategic positioning to control passage from the north to the south of Europe. The castle took on the oval shape of the genuine island upon which it was built. It is approximately 100m long and 50m wide. It also took its name from the rock; the word ‘Chillon’ meant ‘rocky platform’ in an ancient language. The history of the castle is marked by three great periods: those of the Savoy family, the Bernese bailiffs and the Canton of Vaud.

The guide was excellent, both in driving and in the tour. The excursion offered plenty of wine, a variety of flavors, and stunning views! The ride along the Swiss Riviera on the way to the wine cellars was simply breathtaking. The addition of the castle visit was a clever touch – 45 minutes of exploring a part of Swiss history, providing a pleasant break from all the wine. The only downside I would mention is that there were no snacks or accompaniments with the wines at the cellars, but this is not the organizer's fault.
