Overview

Spend your morning by all your senses in the south part of Shanghai's former French Concession where you will try out over 15 local breakfast, such as pan-fried dumplings (sheng jian bao), soup dumplings (xiao long bao), scallion pancake, jianbing and more in some unique Mom and Pop small restaurants or even from hole-in-the-wall street vendors. This 3-hour small group walking tour is not just about local breakfast experience but also to discover the city background, the people and the culture.

  • Xintiandi

    Meet your local guide near the Xintiandi area at 9am, and start with the taste of the fresh fried pot stickers in the alleyway surrounded by city high rises. Discover Shanghai's breakfast culture by walking through the backyards of traditional stone-gate houses (Shikumeng) which soon will be demolished due to on going urban renewal projects.

  • Former French Concession

    You will sample the thin noodles with various topping such as pickled vegetable, shredded pork braised in soy sauce, sweet potatoes with bean curd sauce. Sip a cup of the tea at the traditional tea shop in the local neighborhood.

  • People's Square (Renmin Guang Chang)

    Your last stop of the tour is at Dahuchun near by the People Square, one of the oldest dumplings restaurant open since 1932. You will taste the curry beef soup covered fresh Chinese parsley, the signature dish here.

This was one of the most delicious, filling and interesting food tours I’ve ever taken (and I’ve taken them in 20+ cities). Jim was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable not only about all the food we tasted but also about Shanghai’s history as well. I definitely recommend this tour!

The tour is a great way to see a more local side of Shanghai. The places chosen are family owned or local. The food is delicious, I especially enjoyed the tea tasting. The guide is very friendly with great English and very happy to answer questions.

I booked the Shanghai Breakfast Walking Tour of the Former French Concession, and it was a wonderful experience! My tour guide, Jim, was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and caring. He took the time to show me around the city and share fascinating insights about Shanghai’s history and culture. One of the highlights of the tour was trying all the delicious traditional Chinese food. Jim introduced me to so many amazing dishes that I wouldn’t have discovered on my own. We also visited a local fruit market, enjoyed the Chinese tea session, and got a glimpse into daily life in China. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this trip and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting China. The Shanghai food tour is a must-try experience—you won’t want to miss the mouthwatering food and the chance to explore this vibrant city!

We did four food tours while we were in China and this was by far the best. Jim was an amazing guide and we went to the best restaurants and had plenty of food. If you have any doubts, just book yourself for this tour. You’ll see Shanghai from a great perspective and Jim will make your day wonderful.
