York is amazing. King George VI once said, 'The history of York is the history of England'. Well he wasn't wrong. The city has been home to Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Normans. It has been the 'capital' of the north and has been a centre for trade, commerce and power through the centuries. Today York is a vibrant, modern city with one of the best windows on the past that you will ever find. Join me on a tour of my fascinating home city to learn more about its history and what has made it the city it is today. Walk in the footsteps of Roman soldiers and marauding Vikings, pass through medieval streets, stand in the shadow of one of the world's great cathedrals and take in the view from the city walls.

Itinerary

York Minster (Pass By)

We will view and learn about the Minster from the outside. If you wish to enter the Minster, and this is recommended, then please do so before or after the tour.
Bootham Bar

One of four mediaeval gates to the city. Bootham Bar sits on the site off an older Roman entrance to the Roman fortress of Eboracum.

Multangular Tower (Pass By)

Part of the Roman fortifications, one of the few sections of Roman wall visible today.
St. Mary's Abbey

Walk through the ruins of the mediaeval St.Mary's Abbey in the Museum Gardens.

York City Walls

Walk the section of city walls from Bootham Bar to Monk Bar.

25 minutes
Jorvik Viking Centre (Pass By)

We walk past the Jorvik Centre. If you wish to visit the centre, then please do so before or after the tour.
Clifford's Tower (Pass By)

We finish the tour at the base of Clifford's Tower. If you wish to visit the inside of the tower, then please do so before or after the tour.
Shambles

We walk along the beautiful, world famous Shambles.

Dean's Park

From Dean's Park we will observe and learn about York Minster.

Monk Bar

We will leave the city walls at this point and learn about this famous entrance to the mediaeval city, before heading into the centre of the city.

Merchant Adventurers' Hall

We walk around the grounds of this impressive mediaeval hall. If you wish to visit inside this impressive building then please do so either before or after the tour.

Amazing History

Richard was extremely knowledgeable about the history of York and we visited many places that were hidden away. This was a godsend because as a tourist you would have no idea of their existence. I was surprised how much area we covered. York has an incredible history and I highly recommend Richard's tour as the perfect introduction to your time here.
