Itinerary

Church of Paraportiani

The Church of Panagia Paraportiani is situated in the neighbourhood of Kastro, in the town of Chora, on the Greek island of Mykonos. Its name literally means "Our Lady of the Side Gate" in Greek, as its entrance was found in the side gate of the entrance to the Kastro area. Construction of this church started in 1425 and was not completed until the 17th century. This impressive, whitewashed church actually consists of five separate churches which are joined: the four churches (dedicated to Saint Eustathios, Saint Sozon, Saints Anargyroi and Saint Anastasia) are at ground level and constitute the base of the fifth church that has been built above them.

More than a million tourists flock to the stunning isle of Mykonos every year to soak up its sun-drenched beaches, stunning sights, excellent entertainment and laid back Mediterranean charm. There’s a wealth of things to do in Mykonos, whether you want to shop til you drop, wander through picturesque streets, visit gorgeous white villages, quaint churches, lazy windmills and exquisite sandy beaches. The heart of the island is known by locals and tourists to be Matoyianni / Matogianni Street in Chora. The street is dominated by designer stores, souvenir shops, and handmade jewellery designers / sellers..

What a great introduction to...

What a great introduction to Mykonos' Old Town. Our guide, Athina, was wonderful. She was extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic and personable. She talked to us briefly to make sure she knew everything we wanted to see and then we headed out. Her knowledge of the history and culture of Mykonos was extensive and her advice on where to go and what to see was very helpful. And most of all, she is a warm, fun person to spend a few hours with. We visited the small streets, full of fancy stores, the windmills, the famous Panagia Paraportiani Church, the waterside tavernas, the windmill overlooking the harbor and much, much more. At the end of the tour she recommended an excellent restaurant where we had one of our best meals on Mykonos. For a short - but comprehensive - tour of Mykonos' Old Town, I would highly recommend this tour!
