Our guide Diomedes (sorry if I spelt it wrong!) was great. He helped us practise our Spanish whilst telling us about the sites we were visiting and the wider Dominican Republic life, economy, places etc. We visited a coffee and chocolate plantation and saw the beans/coco pods growing on the trees. We tried the finished product and there was opportunity to buy products from the local farmer if you wanted to. Then to the cigar factory which we enjoyed even though we don’t smoke. We got to roll the cigars ourselves and try some local alcoholic products. There is a gift shop here if you want to buy anything. Finally we went to the beautiful cathedral in Higuey which was really stunning, the architecture is very special and worth seeing, as was the local market where we tried sugar cane drink. The market was very authentic with many fresh fruits, spices and meats for sale at butchers stalls and live chickens. Our kids (14 and 11) enjoyed this tour and taste of local real Dominican life and half a day was a good length of time to enjoy the local culture for them. Would recommend.
