Hop on an open safari truck to see the real Dominican Republic, beyond your resort in Punta Cana! Leaving Punta Cana and traveling towards Higuey, the largest city in the Dominican Republic's eastern region, the excursion makes a stop at a local school where the safari team sponsors a community project that benefits several villages with basic education. Passing through the vast sugar cane fields so common to the east of the Dominican Republic, the tour then visits one of the country's most famous churches - the Basilica de Higuey, dedicated to Our Lady of the Altagracia, the patron saint of the Dominican Republic.

Fantastic time. Our guide was so knowledgeable and really took the time to explain everything. We got to visit a local food market, school, basilica, traditional home! Exactly what we wanted to experience.

Getting off the beaten bath

Our cruise ship docked too late to catch an early, all day country tour so this ended up being a private tour to visit the backcountry mountains, a working planation, and a downtown open-air community market. It was so interesting; we enjoyed getting off the beaten path and away from all the tourist traps. Our guide was knowledgable and very personable We were served a delicious authentic lunch of local cuisine. Requested plantains and they made some fresh just for us. Very enjoyable day for the 4 of us. Nancy

it was a wonderful experience. It was good to see how people in the city live. We had an excellent tour guide and learnt a lot about the history of the different places visited. We rolled our own very cigars, got some sugar cane, fruits from the market, and had some real local DR cuisine not included in tour cost.

All in all, it was a great excursion.
