a friend in heidelberg is the name of my service. Many guests of mine told me that this describes extremely well what I have to offer. The stops mentioned under "Itinerary" are possible destinations of our tour. I am more than happy to compose an individual tour, which is based entirely on your preferences and wishes. I was not only born in the famous historical city of Heidelberg and know the area extremely well, but also lived and worked in the US and hence speak fluent English. If you wish, I can help you with the organization of your trip ahead of time.

    Heidelberg is only one of many possible destinations, but in case of a tour with "a friend in Heidelberg" almost a must. Heidelberg is my hometown and I not only know the city like the back of my hand but also its vicinity. The Heidelberg Castle and the world-famous historic old town are a must see. However, off the beaten track there is much more to discover.

  • Dilsberg Castle Fortress

    The castle fortress of Dilsberg, one of many possible destinations on our journey, rises proudly above Neckargemünd on the mountain of the same name. The castle once belonged to the Counts Palatine of the Rhine and fulfilled a military function. Today, the stair tower in the ruins offers a fantastic view over the Neckar Valley and Odenwald.

  • Schloss Hirschhorn

    Hirschhorn, one of many possible destinations of our journey, is also called the pearl of the Neckar valley. In the summer of 1878 Mark Twain visited Hirschhorn and dedicated a chapter in his book "A Tramp Abroad" to the city. Among the sights of Hirschhorn are the medieval castle as well as the historic old town with its numerous old half-timbered houses. On our way back we will stop to see the ruined castle of Dilsberg which is not only a marvel of medieval architecture but one also known for a stunning view of the Neckar river valley.

    The Schwetzingen Palace is one of many possible destinations of our journey. Worth seeing is the 18th century castle garden.

  • Speyer Cathedral

    The Speyer Cathedral, one of many possible destinations of our journey, is the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world. Four emperors, three empresses and kings from the houses of Habsburg, Staufen and Nassau are buried here. The cathedral is thus the most important burial site of the Middle Ages on German soil.

    Deidesheim, one of many possible destinations on our trip, is located on the German Wine Route, one of the oldest tourist routes in Germany. Picturesque villages and renowned wineries with excellent restaurants can be found along this road.

    The old town of Heppenheim, one of many possible destinations of our journey, is characterized by old half-timbered houses and offers a picturesque old town center, a location which in recent years has established itself as a popular movie backdrop for the Bollywood film industry. The 11th century castle of Starkenburg on the mountain opposite the old town is not only worth seeing but also worth a visit.

    Rothenburg, one of many possible destinations of our journey, is a world-famous tourist attraction with a largely preserved medieval old town. The historic town center is surrounded by a impressive town fortification and embedded in the largely unobstructed landscape of the Tauber river valley.

    Strasbourg, one of many possible destinations of our journey, has a well-preserved historical old town, classified a World Heritage Site since 1988. The famous sandstone gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame with its famous astronomical clock is the city's landmark. In the streets and squares surrounding the cathedral you will find a medieval cityscape of Rhineland black and white timber-framed buildings. Another landmark worth visiting is the district of La Petite France with its canals and narrow alleys.

  • Mercedes-Benz Museum

    The Mercedes-Benz Museum, just one of many possible destinations of our journey. The website describes absolutely aptly what the visitor can expect: The museum relates its history and tells its stories, bringing both alive by placing them in the context of technology, day-to-day life, social history and popular culture. More than 160 vehicles of all types are the main protagonists. They range from some of the oldest automobiles ever built to legendary racing cars and futuristic research vehicles. Together with other exhibits, they form the centerpiece of the permanent exhibition covering a total of 16,500 square meters in twelve rooms. This unparalleled world can be discovered on two tours that follow a “Legend” and “Collection” narrative.

Manfred: The Friend Who Turns Heidelberg Into Home

Okay, where do I begin? Besides the usual—he’s punctual, attentive, professional, knowledgeable, and detail-oriented—Manfred is so much more than that. True to his tagline, he really is a friend in Heidelberg—not just to his clients but to everyone in the city! His charisma and genuine nature make him friends with local shop owners, store workers, and even strangers in cafés. When you’re with Manfred, you don’t just visit Heidelberg; you feel like part of the community. Instead of simply enjoying Germany’s famous beer, sausages, old towns, castles, and churches, Manfred gives you an experience of what it’s like to truly live in Germany—becoming part of the Heidelberg community, befriending locals, and eating what they eat every day. Manfred takes the time to get to know his clients and tailors every experience to them, rather than just taking them to the usual touristy spots. Traveling with Manfred feels like a treasure hunt. Manfred was an outstanding tour guide who truly did feel like a friend, from before we even met with his helpful and funny communications to the last minute of the tour when he made sure we boarded the right train back to Frankfurt. He is so knowledgeable about history, literature, architecture, pop culture, current events - and so interested in his guests and making them at ease as well! Heidelberg was magical to me- like a fairytale, as everyone says- and our favorite was the Schloss but all of our stops for the day we spent with Manfred were terrific. Manfred does a great job curating sights based on detailed questions he asks in advance- for example, we wanted to stop at a smaller artisan Christmas market and he took us to the most enchanting little village and market that we never would have known about. We enjoyed every minute of our day with him and were comfortable and warm the whole time too! I cannot recommend him enough. Spend a day with Manfred and you too will have a friend in Heidelberg!

Wonderful Custom Daytrip

Our day with Manfred was perfect! Prior to the trip, he helped my husband and I plan an outing that included highlights of the Black Forest and the Christmas Market at Baden Baden. Manfred even included links to videos and other info that would help us enjoy our time in Heidelberg prior to and after our time with him. When the day for our tour arrived, he picked us up in Heidelberg in his comfortable and spotless car and drove us to Lake Mummelsee. The visibility was not right for the hike we had planned, but Manfred quickly pivoted to take us on a gentle hike around Lake Mummelsee which was so picturesque with the snow & ice on the trees. We enjoyed some hot cocoa after the hike and then Manfred took us to a shop so that we could purchase a cuckoo clock at a discounted price. We had lunch at an an amazing restaurant where we sampled Black Forest specialties (including black forest cake)! The Christmas Market at Baden-Baden was amazing and it was nice to be able to enjoy gluhwein knowing that Manfred would get us back safely to Heidelberg!

Do not delay booking Manfred! He is Germany’s best kept secret, but not for long. Manfred’s knowledge and love of his homeland is comprehensive and contagious. He joyfully catered to our needs and interests, creating a one-of-a-kind experience for us. You’ll come away with many magical memories and a friend for life. We originally booked him for a one-day trip to Heidelberg, his hometown, and were so blown away by the comfort and ease that we experienced that we tried to book more days, but he was not available. By a stroke of luck, another group cancelled at the last minute, and we were able to add another day with him touring Germany’s oldest city, Trier. If we’d been able to book him for our entire trip, we would have done so. Can't wait until next time to create another great experience with Manfred!
