Montserrat is a beautiful and stunning Benedictine monastery set within the mountains. We took an organised coach trip which included the rack railway which took a scenic journey up to the monastery. The rack railway is accessible for visitors with less mobility.
Once at the Monastery, the toilets, shops and restaurant areas are accessible if you have reduced mobility but there are slight inclines in some areas. There is a step free entrance to the Basilica and there are a few seats outside the Basilica to enjoy the surrounding and listen to the bell ringing.
The Black Madonna is the patron saint of Catalonia and presides over the high altar in the monastery's basilica. The statue is carved from wood. There are usually long queues to view the Madonna together with lots of steps and once there you can touch the orb for good luck (the Madonna itself is protected behind a screen). Unfortunately, if your mobility restricts you to a wheelchair, you will be unable to reach the Black Madonna as there is no direct accessible route.
We also took the Saint Joan Funicular Railway (additional cost) and it gives you the wonderful views of the mountain and Monastery from a viewpoint in the small museum attached the funicular station. There are walks you can take around the natural park. There is a toilet in the station. Once again, if your mobility restricts you to a wheelchair then gaining access to the Funicular railway will be impossible as there are steep stairs on both sides of the carriage and there is no alternative accessible route.
It is a lovely place to visit and very peaceful even with the crowds; if you have restricted mobility getting around some of the areas will be difficult or impossible which may be disappointing. Try to read up as much as you can before heading here to ensure you get the most from your visit.
