I was skeptical as I am typically averse to group tours, however it would not have been possible to have this experience on our own. Our guide Marika is an intensely likable 23 year old grad student specializing in Italian food science. To say she was knowledgeable would be an understatement. It felt like a college 101 course field trip for cheese, ham and balsamic production- and I mean this in the best possible way. Our guide was clearly trusted by the three small business owners because she had unfettered access to the production facilities and took care of the places as if they were her own. We were lucky to be in a small group of 7, but I understand in high season they can accommodate a group of 20. The mid day lunch at Osteria La Maesta was really something - at a place no tourist would likely find on their own, and the proprietor Donnatellaā¦ I wish she were my aunt. The mini bus was comfortable and perhaps changed my mind on group tours. Well done Marika and company!
