We had an extraordinary tour, made personal and memorable by our incredible guide, Laurence. She held a wealth of knowledge, personalizing it with stories and anecdotes making France not a tourist destination, but a living, breathing historical homeland for many. We saw so much: the requisite tour of the Fragonard perfume factory which continues to delight (especially with the explanations provided by the exquisite French/European young ladies. A bracing breakfast at Patissiere Stephanie Saluzzo, winner of World Bread Championship, and we were off to see the incredible views and sites at Gourdon, Tourettes sur Loup and St. Paul du Vence. in Gourdon, the view from the balcony was amazing as paragliders flew overhead. In Tourettes, a tile "map" showed what we we were viewing in the crystal clear sky from the medival terrace, In St Paul de Vence, the world-famous La Columbe d'Or sits waiting for your reservation (make them months in advance, sil vou plait. As famous for its guests as its location: Picasso, Yves Montand, Matisse, Braque, Leger, Cesar, James Baldwin and Calder - many have left works that are on display in the hotel and restaurant. Another art story in Saint Paul de Vence is the lovely gravesite of Marc Chagall (1887-1985). Forty years after the master's death, pilgrims still bring painted rocks and plain ones and leave them in homage to him and place them on his grave.
We highly recommend this tour and if you can request Laurence, you will want to be her best friend, like we did. She is an extraordinary woman. We won't divulge her story. You have to book the tour and let her tell you herself.
