Private lesson - One-on-one instruction - Cost $120 - 90 minutes instruction time. - Board and rash-guard included for lesson duration. - Best for intermediate surfers that would like to bring their surfing to the next level or individuals who want or need personalized instruction.

Your trip to Costa Rica wouldn’t be complete without the thrill of catching your first wave! From beginner surf lessons to surf coaching for accomplished surfers, Frijoles Locos Surf Shop in Playa Grande offers a complete range of surf lesson options. People of all ages, from kids to grandparents, enjoy our professional, fun, and safe surf instruction. Beginners start out with our safety & ocean awareness instruction and pop up practice on the beach before you hit the ocean and catch your first waves. Intermediates will get a refresher on safety and will appreciate the instructor's local knowledge of the break and help identifying the best waves. Playa Grande literally translates to “big beach,” with plenty of space for our surf instructors to select a quiet, uncrowded location for your surf lesson. Surf stoke guaranteed!!

  • Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller
  • Service animals allowed
  • Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness
  • Times are dictated by the tides. Always reach out to Frijoles Locos to check best time for lesson on your preferred day!
  • A minimum of 4 people required for group lessons.
  • 1 surf instructor can teach up to 4 students.
  • 2 surf instructors can teach up to 8 students.
  • 3 surf instructors can teach up to 12 students.
  • Heights/weights of participants is helpful to choose the right equipment.
  • Children under 12 are not permitted to participate in group lesson due to safety reasons.
  • Minimum age is 3 years and there is no maximum age ;)
  • Same pricing applies to all travelers
  • Subject to favorable weather conditions. If canceled due to poor weather (thunder & lightning), you will be given the option of an alternative date or full refund.
  • Cancellation policy: All cancellations within 24 hours of scheduled activity will incur a full penalty fee

Couples surfing lesson - 1st time

Had a great time our first time surfing. Westin was fantastic and showed us the fundamentals and helped us catch some waves our first time out. Highly recommend them for your surfing rentals and lessons!

Frijoles Locos was just fantastic in so many ways. We found the shop in advance of our trip and it was easy to set up bike and surfboard rentals online for our vacation on Playa Grande. We took a surf lesson from Stefi and she was incredible- the perfect combination of fun, efficiency, and on-point constructive feedback. We had an hour of her time and expertise. My husband has surfed before but I have not- I think Stefi had me standing up on the board on a real wave within 15min of our session starting. The shop is well stocked with basics and excellent merch. A number of us (adults and nearly adult kids) now own hats and/or shorts with their cool logo. We had an incredible beach vacation in large part because of the people and gear at Frijoles Locos. Muchas gracias!

Great Learn to Surf Experience

Great learn to surf lesson with Rodrigo and Pano! They gave us great dry land preparation and then took us into the waves and had us all up on the boards in no time! They coached us throughout giving us tips on timing and body position and celebrated our successful efforts! Looking forward to day 2 with them!

Our family of four beginner surfers (parents and teens) just returned from Playa Grande where we had three super fun lessons with Jost. He is an excellent teacher who explained the fundamentals really well. We all felt very safe and learned a lot! We much preferred being out with an instructor instead of trying to figure it out on our own. I also really appreciated the good communication during the booking process and how organized things were once we arrived. Thank you!!
