Overview

The ascent to the mountain of Pico and the descent to the Caldeira do Faial are two adventures that complement each other. These activities are recommended for true nature lovers. Enter this exclusive trail inside the largest volcanic crater on the island of Faial. On this descent of about 400 meters (vertically), you will find the vegetation that covered the island before its settlement and feel what it is like to be in the center of one of the largest craters in the Azores. It is undoubtedly a unique experience, not to be missed during your visit to Faial. Please read the "Necessary information for travelers" section.

Itinerary

This is a special trail, located within a Natural Reserve available only with a certified guide. We start by going down this fantastic trail with a privileged view of the interior of the Caldeira (one of the largest and most impressive craters in the Azores), where we will see various examples of lush vegetation. Two thirds of all the endemic vegetation of the Azores are present here, making this place an authentic natural botanical garden. After the descent we will see the fountain inside and then head towards the intermittent lake where you can take the opportunity to take a walk on the water while enjoying the magic of this place. It will be like being in Jurassic Park! Please read the "More Information" section.

Important: This trail is located in a humid habitat, so it is common to find flooded areas where we will have to cross, it also has very narrow passages and places that, in order to progress, it is necessary to use your hands to make small climbs and overcome obstacles. For a safe experience, we recommend that participants are in shape, have physical strength and are used to taking challenging walks in nature.
What to bring: Comfortable footwear and clothing suitable for mountain hiking (weather conditions can vary quickly).
Mandatory: Hiking boots/shoes (tennis shoes and other types of shoes with flat soles are not acceptable for this hike).
Important: bring at least 1 liter of water and a small snack for when we reach the base of the Caldeira. It is advisable to wear clothing that covers your arms and legs due to the presence of brambles at the base of the crater.
If participants are not in good physical shape to safely undertake this hike, and/or do not come with the appropriate and recommended equipment, the guide may cancel this activity (without the right to a refund). If the guide has to cancel the descent to Caldeira, the procedure will be as follows: If there are more participants, customers will have to return to the starting point and wait for the group to return, or return to the accommodation (in this case, expenses are the responsibility of the customer).
In case of cancellation due to weather conditions, a refund will be made but €6 per participant will be deducted from the Faial Natural Park entrance fee.

This experience is non-refundable and cannot be changed for any reason. If you cancel or ask for an amendment, the amount you paid will not be refunded.

This experience requires a minimum number of travelers. If it’s canceled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund.

Amazing activity and a special place to visit! Unique to see the crater from the inside out. Challenging trail, but so worth it. Kids enjoyed it as well. Guide Ramiro knows a lot about the environment.
