Bois Cheri Tea Factory and Tea Museum

Bois Cheri is located on the upper plateau, where the tea plantation takes advantage of the cool climate of Mauritius. The modernized architectural factory offers visitors the chance to witness how the tea leaves are processed from plant to teapot. The leaves are hand-picked from the surrounding gardens, which exude a fresh and woody smell during the process of oxidization. The successful sale of the Bois Cheri tea started in the 19th century and enjoys popularity today with a production of up to 700 tons of tea every year. The museum houses a diverse collection of photos of colonial houses and offers interesting insights into tea history.

Amma Tookay Hindu Temple

Burrowed in the village of Camp Diable, stands erected one of the most beautiful temples of the island. Legend goes that, during the 19th century, when all rocks were being removed at that spot for the plantation of sugarcane, one specific rock proved impossible to lift or even break, despite also the owner trying different methods. The locals then started to deem the rock holy and began to worship it. Some say that the rock was a statue of Amma Tookay. The Tookay temple was then built around this rock.

Gris Gris Beach

The southernmost beach of Mauritius, Gris Gris, is far from the habitual white sandy ones with a calm blue lagoon but is still magnificent albeit in a different manner. Instead of white sand, you are greeted by a rocky cliff which descends steeply into the rough sea where huge waves are king. The absence of coral reef in this part of the island means the ocean waves reach the coast undisturbed, with all their might. Take a stroll along the cliffs as you watch the waves crash and send showers of water. On the furthest right end of the cliff, you are offered a panoramic view of the cliffs and waves dancing violently off them.

Gris Gris Beach

Admire the breathtaking views at La Roche Qui Pleure. Literally translated into the weeping rock, La Roche Qui Pleure is an extremely popular natural phenomenon which occurs along the coast of Gris Gris. Easily accessible through a path cutting through lush greenery and numerous signs pointing the way, this area is frequently visited by a large number of tourists who are curious of observing this optical illusion. The lack of coral reefs resulting in the strong oceanic waves reaching the coast undisturbed is the root cause of this phenomenon. The huge waves hit the rocks in such a way, that the remaining water flowing down produces a tear like apparition on the rocks, hence the name ‘Weeping Rock’.

Riviere des Galets is a rather unique beach found in the south of Mauritius, owing to its peculiar setting. Sand is barely visible to completely absent on this beach, but instead the location is covered with tiny pebbles which have turned smooth with the constant action of the waves crashing on them. Although the waters are not suitable for swimming, the beach is a must visit for the sheer calming beauty of the strong waves crashing on the pebbly beach. At just 2 m from the beach, lies Ilot Sanchot, which actually is an islet of its own but is so close to land that it is easily accessible by foot during low tide with the water barely reaching one’s knees. The islet offers a perfect point of view of the majestic ocean waves.

Le Morne

Towering over the south east of the island, le Morne Brabant is the majestically beautiful mountain you might have seen in many internet pictures about Mauritius. This mountain has much cultural and historical significance for the country as it was used by the slaves that would ran away from the whips of their masters and seeked shelter in the caves on the slopes. As the day ends, sit back on the white sand beach of Le Morne, sip on a nice cold Phoenix Beer or enjoy a swim in the blue turquoise waters before being returned to your accommodation in Mauritius.
