We are so glad we decided to do this tour. What Francis has done is created a rich and sophisticated analysis of the Troubles that grounds in the humanity of peoples lives, centers dignity, and provides a textured experience of both Catholic and Protestant experiences. The tour has two parts, one with Francis, another with his partner, Mickey. First we took the Black cab with Mickey to better understand the nature of Republican resistance to Loyalist oppression, moving to sacred and historic spots along Falls Road. Mickey shared with deep pride Frederick Douglass visit and the solidarity of movements that ranged from Palestine to support for the South African apartheid movements. We saw significant murals, monuments, religious institutions, Sinn Fein areas and made a stop at the Peace Wall. He told the stories of interned prisoners and was particularly emotive around the role that Bobby Sands are the hunger strikers played in bringing attention to Republican plight. We transitioned to a van where Francis took us to places beyond the atypical Shankill Road and shared stories of his childhood. He told us about his own experiences in the paramilitary, his life in the Loyalist areas and took us to more obscure Loyalist sites to understand the depth of the cause. We also had the privilege of hearing about his longstanding work in peacemaking processes and ended up taking a copy of his book.
These are a few details, but it's hard to overview how meaningful this tour was. We did not go to the Titanic, but can't find the specific tour on this site.
