Overview

The tour will start in Cagliari from the Harbor or from your hotel. After an easy 45-minute drive to Barumini, we will cross the Marmilla Region, trough fields of wheat and artichokes. Once in Barumini, you will discover one of the most beautiful prehistoric sites of the Mediterranean sea, the 3,800-year-old Fortress of Su Nuraxi, protected by UNESCO and representative of Sardinian Nuragic Culture. After this stop, leave for another adventure in the Giara plateau, where the little wild horses live.

Unique site in a lovely setting

The Barumini UNESCO site is a must-visit for all amateur history buffs, especially those interested in the development of primary architectural engineering in dry wall construction.

Sardinia is more than beaches!

Visiting Sardinia in the off season of December has its advantages. Franco Cerniglia arrived on time at my hotel to take me to the Barumini UNESCO site and along the way shared interesting facts about Sardinia. He advised to visit the nearby museum first and that was helpful in understanding the information from the guide for the UNESCO site. The small group of 5 was just right for the narrow passages and I can’t imagine a bigger tour group in the small spaces. Then he took me to see the Giari of Gesturi and I was not disappointed with the small horses. There was no else around on the road or to see the horses. It’s a festive time to visit Sardinia with less tourists.

Franco is an excellent guide. His love for his island shows in all he says and does. The site of Barumini is a must see. We had a great tour.

A great way to spend the afternoon

It was well worth doing a trip this way, and lovely to have the chance to explore beyond the city - not so easy as a tourist in Cagliari if you don’t have a car. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. It was a very well organised trip and we learned a lot, from him as well as from the sites we visited. Highly recommended.

Prehistoric monuments and wild horses: a wonderful trip with Franco

We had a terrific time with Franco. Su Nuraxi was amazing - much more impressive than I had imagined in advance. We had a beautiful drive into the countryside with Franco as he told us about Sardinia, then a fantastic tour of Su Nuraxi (you buy separate tickets when you arrive). Then Franco drove us up to the top of a high plateau with an amazing view of the countryside where we saw wild horses and cork trees and learned about the local landscape. We drove back as the sun set and saw even more beautiful views coming down from the plateau. This is a perfect time of day to do this trip and it was a lovely way to see outside of Cagliari. Franco was a wonderful guide.
