Itinerary
The Alhambra
The Alhambra, located on the Sabica hill, is an Andalusian palatine city.
Its name comes from the reddish colour of its walls, coming from the clay of the land itself (Al-Hamra in Arabic).
It is formed by a group of palaces, gardens and fortress where there was a citadel within the city of Granada itself, its main function was to serve as accommodation for the monarch and the court of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. There are also Christian settlements, such as the palace of Charles V and the church of Santa Maria, built on top of the old mosque.
It is one of the most visited monuments in Spain and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984.
3 hours
Palace of Carlos V
Carlos V's palace is a Renaissance construction by the architect Pedro Machuca. The palace is unique in its style, forming a square with a circular courtyard inscribed inside. It is the most outstanding work of the Spanish Renaissance.
30 minutes
Generalife
The Generalife is the villa with gardens used by the Muslim kings of Granada as a place of retreat and rest. It was conceived as a rural villa, where ornamental gardens, orchards and architecture were integrated in the vicinity of the Alhambra.
The name we give to the Generalife complex literally means Yannat al-Arif: "The Architect's Garden", an allusion to the gardens and orchards that supplied fruit and vegetables to the Nasrid court. However, the palace to which we are heading, designed as a resting place for the monarch, was what the poet Ibn al-Jayyab called "the royal house of happiness".
45 minutes
N/A
The Alcazaba is the oldest part of the Alhambra, from the Arabic: القصبة al-qaṣbah (citadel) was a fortified enclosure of urban character, whose function was to serve as royal residence to Mohamed I until the Palaces were finished, from there its function was purely military.
45 minutes
Granada Cathedral
The Santa Iglesia Catedral de la Encarnación de Granada is a Catholic church, the seat of the city's archdiocese. It is considered one of the most important works of the Spanish Renaissance.
In 1492 the Catholic Monarchs ordered its construction and it was designed, in principle, following the Gothic model of Toledo Cathedral. The construction of the Cathedral covered almost two centuries, until the beginning of the 18th century.
The construction involved artists of great value, among which include Enrique Egas, Diego de Siloé and Alonso Cano and his assistant Pedro de Mena.
1 hour
Royal Chapel of Granada
The Royal Chapel was built in the first place and sits on the remains of the main mosque, was a symbol of the change of era and triumph of Christianity over Islam over the last Islamic city in Spain. It's Gothic style, it can find the remains of the Catholic Monarchs, Juana la Loca and her husband Philip the Beautiful, as well as the little infant Michael.
1 hour
Parque De Las Ciencias
The Science Park was the first interactive science museum to be built in Andalusia, it was inaugurated in 1995. It covers an area of 70,000 square metres. And it is one of the main attractions for both tourists and citizens of Granada.
It has both interior rooms such as the Al-Andalus Pavilion and Science as well as other exterior rooms such as the Darwin Pavilion. It is also possible to come into contact with nature through activities such as the Raptor Talles en Vuelo or the Biodome room. In addition to knowing more about the sky thanks to the Planetarium.
5 hours
Monasterio de la Cartuja
The Royal Monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de la Cartuja housed a community of Carthusian monks from its foundation in the 16th century until the exclaustration in 1835. Despite mixing different styles, it represents one of the peaks of Spanish Baroque architecture.
Nowadays, it is considered as an Asset of Cultural Interest and was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument.
1 hour
Monastero San Jeronimo
The Monastery of San Jerónimo was the first monastery to be built in Granada after the conquest of the city by the Christians, and its foundation dates back even before the taking of the city by the Catholic Monarchs. Its construction began in 1504, the works were directed mostly by Diego de Siloé. It is a Renaissance architectural ensemble formed by church and monastery. It is currently considered a BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural).
2 hours
Abadia del Sacromonte
Located on Mount Valparaiso, one of the hills that make up Granada, from this place you can see a beautiful panorama: the Alhambra, the Christian city, the Albayzín, Jesús del Valle... It is the Abbey of Sacromonte of the seventeenth century, today residence of canons, parish and ecclesiastical museum.
In 1595 the relics of San Cecilio, disciple of the Apostle Santiago, were found in the Ilupitano mountain (now the Sacromonte), as well as some lead plaques written in Arabic, known as the plumb books, which were found in Roman ovens. The repercussion that this discovery had was enormous and the place became a centre of pilgrimage.
2 hours
Casa de Zafra
Located near the Darro race, this is an excellently preserved example of Hispanic-Muslim housing of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
It preserves some impressive original wall paintings of the time and, from the same one can admire some beautiful views of the Alhambra.
It is also an Interpretation Centre in the Albaicín district.
45 minutes
Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo
The Royal Room dates from the 13th century and is the clear predecessor of the construction of the Alhambra, being the origin of Nazari architecture and decorative themes. The property, called Huerta Grande de la Almanjarra, is located next to the Plaza de los Campos, in what was the suburb of Los Alfareros, possibly walled during the reign of Muhammad II.
The Cuarto Real was a small palace, owned by Queen Aixa, Boabdil's mother, and used as a place of rest and retreat.
1 hour
Museo Casa de Los Tiros de Granada
The Casa de los Tiros Museum was built between 1530 and 1540, similar to the palaces of Granada at the time. It receives its name from the cannons that appear between its battlements. It was part of the wall of the district of the Potters, hence its appearance of a military fortress.
It is currently the headquarters of a Library and Newspaper Library specialized in Granada themes.
