Deep in the heart of Croatian Zagorje, near Varaždin, there lies a beautiful castle with a park and a lake, which captivates the eye of domestic and foreign tourists. Trakošćan Castle is one of the most romantic and fairy tale-like sites you have ever seen, with a nearly 800-year history behind it. Trakošćan Castle is a cultural and historic monument of exceptional significance and one of few edifices in Croatia with its own preserved holdings; it was built in the late 13th century within the defence system... The Krapina Neanderthal Museum is a museum affiliated to the Museums of Croatian Zagorje and its vision and mission statements have taken into account European values. The museum vision aims towards a democratically governed society in which museums continuously contribute to mutual understanding and development through responsible use of natural and cultural heritage.

    Trakošćan Castle is a castle located in northern Croatia that dates back to the 13th century and is one of the rare objects in Croatia with fully preserved construction, historically tied to the architectural frame and life of its owners- the Drašković family. The toponym „Trakošćan“ was first mentioned in written documents from 1334. Castle Trakošćan’s cultural heritage, is protected as a historical entity, which consists of the castle, the building next to the castle, park and forest park with a lake. Today the castle is one of the few facilities in Croatia with preserved its own constitution, historically closely related to the architectural framework and the life of its owners.

  • Krapina Neanderthal Museum

    The new Krapina Neanderthal Museum is located near the world-famous site of the Krapina Neanderthals „Hušnjakovo“, a fact which makes it a unique visiting complex. Krapina Neanderthal Museum is located near the excavation site Hušnjakovo, wherein 1899 the world's largest collection of Neanderthal fossil bones was found. More than nine hundred fossil bones of Neanderthals and numerous fossil remains of Pleistocene animals (woolly rhinoceros, cave bear, wolf, elk, giant deer, and many other ) were found in the cave sandstone deposits. Over a thousand pieces of stone tools were witness to the material culture of Krapina Neanderthals. The site dates back to 125 000 BC and it is one of the most significant paleoanthropological localities worldwide. The Museum's architecture evokes the habitat of the prehistoric man: the semi-cave, the volume, proportions, and the front which are a result of the analysis done on the appearance of the ancient Krapina semi-cave.

Trakoscan castle

It was perfect! Such a beautiful medieval castle and all the nature around The exhibition shows the life of the medieval burgh and the rooms where you can move around and get to know the life of the nobility It would be wonderful if the lake had water, but it's still under renovation, so it's not a complete experience. I hope some next time. Love it ♥
