Overview

On this 2.5 hour African American History tour, we will be your "conductor" and take you on a journey through Memphis that will be sure to open your eyes to some of the most historical sites connected to slavery through to the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. There is so much more to Memphis than Downtown to experience, so we will also explore some of our interestingĀ neighborhoods. This tour is for residents, families, and visitors who are looking for the activities to do that are safe, fun and insightful.

Itinerary

  • National Civil Rights Museum - Lorraine Motel (Pass By)

From our vehicle you will see the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, room 306 where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. This is also the location of the National Civil Rights Museum.

  • Slave Haven / Burkle Estate Museum (Pass By)

This was once the home of Jacob Burkle, a German immigrant who chose to participate in the Underground Railroad. This home was a stop on the Underground Railroad and is now a museum.

  • Beale Street (Pass By)

We will tell you the "rest of the story" about this most iconic street. Once referred to as the Negro Mainstreet USA.

  • Historic Mason Temple (Pass By)

This is the world headquarters for the Church of God in Christ. It was here where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his last speech, "I've Been to the Mountaintop" less than 24 hours before he was assassinated.

  • Clayborn Temple (Pass By)

It was in this church, built in the late 1800's, Sanitation Workers gathered to strategize the strike that caused Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to come to Memphis.

INCREDIBLE tour and experience.

This was a REMARKABLE experience. I would recommend this to any individual or family. Jackie is SUPER knowledgable and entertaining. I thought I knew a lot about Memphis and it's history. You will complete this tour realizing that you were only scratching the surface. The history goes deeper than you know.

Queen had the ability to keep the interest of the wide age range of our kids. Plus she handled heavy subjects with care considering our children.

On October 19, 2024, my tour group of 19 and I had the pleasure of experiencing Memphis with a personal tour with ā€˜A Tour of Possibilitiesā€™. Our club sponsors a yearly trip with the purpose of embracing the history and culture of the area visited, ensuring that the location also embodies the African American experience. There is always some level of anxiety when relying on the internet to guide your choices. But in this instance, the positive reputation of ā€˜A Tour of Possibilitiesā€™ rang true. Queen, as she is affectionately and appropriately called, is the awe-inspiring proprietor of ā€˜A Tour of Possibilitiesā€™. She is vibrant, energetic, and knowledgeable. Her passion for history and truth resonates through her every spoken word. She is captivating and affectionate and makes everyone feel valued. She welcomes questions and provides resources for continued exploration. We discovered many legends in Memphis, past and present, and Queen walks alongside such legends. I pray for her continued success in business and in life and that our paths may one day cross again. Ivy & the members of JULSC
