Itinerary

  • Copenhagen King's New Square

Our meeting point, centrally located at the end of the pedestrian street Strøget. The largest square of the city, it was laid out by Christian V in 1670 in connection with a major extension of the fortified city, and has an equestrian statue of him at its centre. The initiative moved the centre of the city from the medieval area around Gammeltorv, at that time a muddy medieval marketplace, to a cobbled new square with a garden complex, inspired by the Royal city planning seen in Paris from the early 17th century. Important buildings facing the square include the Royal Danish Theater from 1874, the Charlottenborg Palace from 1671 (now the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts), the Thott Palace from 1683 (now the French Embassy), the Hotel D'Angleterre and the Magasin du Nord department store.

The Copenhagen Cathedral, today designed by the architect C.F. Hansen in Neo-Classicist style. The foundation stone was laid by King Frederik VI in 1817, and the solemn consecration took place on Whitsunday 1829. This site served a church since Bishop Absalon, the founder of Copenhagen, had a small chapel built on the premises. The original church was erected at the highest point in the town around 1200. The church has seen many important events throughout Danish history. This is where King Valdemar Atterdag gave away his nine-year old daughter Margrethe - later Queen Margrethe I - in marriage in 1363, in 1855 the funeral of Søren Kierkegaard, and in 2004, Crown Prince Frederik and Australian Mary Donaldson were married here. Inside we have Thorvaldsen's sculptures The statues of Christ and the twelve apostles. Above the altar, Christ extends his arms in a welcoming gesture, while the apostles watch from the sides of the nave. Judas has been replaced by Paul. Good recovery and tour

Published on Jul, 2023

We booked a group tour on the Scandinavian Guides website. There was a problem with the booking and we called/texted Luis. The group tour had been cancelled. He apologized for not advising us in advance but committed to find us an alternative in 30 minutes. He called and arranged for us to have a private guide, Jamie, meet us in 30 minutes. We met up with Jamie and had a great tour. Jamie was knowledgeable, friendly and had a good sense of humor. We saw people and places in the old town that we would have never seen on our own. Luis followed up several times to make sure we were satisfied. Luis was able to turn around a customer problem and skillfully made it a success. He took accountability and made it happen.

Highly recommend!
