Overview

Join your host Sundari and experience authentic Indian life, culture and cuisine with a welcoming local in her home. Sundari will teach you to prepare 4-5 dishes as part of your South Indian vegetarian meal which you will later eat the traditional way - with your hands on stainless steel plates or fresh banana leaves. Your menu may include typical Tamilian vegetarian main dishes such as rasam (tangy peppery broth), sambar (lentil and tamarind based vegetable stew), and a variety of vegetable curries, rice, raita, condiments and snacks. Alternatively you may request to learn to make a South Indian brunch of dosas, idlis and vadas with a variety of chutneys instead. Come join Sundari, and leave with new recipes, a new friend and lifelong memories!

Itinerary

Sundari is a warm and cheerful host who will make you feel instantly at home in her beautifully converted in-laws’ house, surrounded by lush fruit trees and adorned with traditional art and decor. A passionate cook since the age of eight, Sundari loves sharing the rich culinary and cultural traditions of South India with her guests. Your experience begins with a tour of Sundari’s home, where she’ll introduce you to the dishes you’ll be preparing. Then, roll up your sleeves and join her in the kitchen for an authentic hands-on culinary journey. As a Tamil Brahmin, Sundari exclusively prepares and serves vegetarian food, honoring her family’s tradition. Together, you’ll cook 4-5 flavorful dishes, forming a traditional South Indian vegetarian meal. Enjoy your creations the local way, eating with your hands on stainless steel plates or fresh banana leaves for an authentic, unforgettable experience. If you join Sundari for dinner or a weekend session, you’ll also meet her husband, Krishna—a true foodie who enjoys meeting new people and adding lively conversations to the experience.

Cannot recommend enough

I had a spectacular experience. Sundari is a great host: when there was an issue with the booking, she went above and beyond to make sure I did not get overcharged. Her teaching style is very approachable, and she is an excellent conversationalist. She also made to give me additional recommendations for my time in Chennai. Overall, it was of my most enjoyable experiences in India thus far.

Sundari combines her skills as both a teacher and cook to deliver an authentic South Indian cooking experience. Her food is delicious and well balanced, underpinned by her extensive food knowledge, all done in an open and welcoming manner. Cooking with her is like going to a special friend’s kitchen and sharing knowledge and food. A thoroughly delightful experience. Thank you Sundari.

Ms.Sundari is a very charming and heart warming teacher,she truelly consider about me and sugested me to teach me cooking what I really need. It was first time for me,so I learn simple and useful recipis,and I was very surprised that everything was so delicious at the same time.Especially,homemade dow of dosa and uthappam was so delicious.

Sometimes you just click. Sundari and I are friends now, trading recipes and cooking tips. I love the giant kitchen she built at home just to teach. She's truly an expert and out time together was unforgettable. If you're in Chennai stop by, learn how to cook the real South Indian food and leave with memories... Pro tip: bring your tiffin to take leftovers with you!
