Overview

Once you arrive, you will be taken on a guided tour (every hour between 9am and 4pm) beginning with a multi-sensory 3D movie detailing the site's history, followed by a detailed look at the living museum inside the Great House, stamp collection and exhibitions and surrounding picturesque landscape. There is also a gift shop and restaurant on site. Since its construction more than two centuries ago, Pedro St. James was used in a variety of ways – as a cotton plantation, courthouse, jail, Government Assembly and restaurant – before the Cayman Islands government purchased the property in 1996 and restored it to its 18th-century grandeur. Today it stands as a dynamic piece of Caymanian heritage. Best known as the “birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands,” Pedro St. James was the venue for a meeting on December 5, 1831, it was decided to form the islands' first elected parliament. Later, on May 3, 1835, the proclamation ending slavery in the British Empire was read from the site.

The Great House is the oldest surviving stone structure in the Cayman Islands dubbed the “birthplace of democracy" and is home to many Cayman cultural and historic tales. On this 90 minute tour, you'll explore the 18th-century building and its artefacts while absorbing the beauty of Pedro St. James, spread across seven landscaped acres with panoramic ocean views. Enjoy a 3D movie that transports you back in time or take a guided tour by a local for an even more authentic experience.

Fantastic history of Grand Cayman island

Our tour guide Trisha was excellent. She was so knowledgeable with much experience being a native to the island but lived in the states for many years. Salute to her and navy seal husband. We learned a lot. The tour was great seeing 240 yrs of history

Fascinating historical site

Our guide, Wilson, was so knowledgeable about the building and its history as well as the island itself. The “castle” has a fascinating history and is so well reconstructed with period furniture and objects. The movie presentation was fun. Gorgeous views of the water and a nice gift shop. Highly recommended!

Went on the guided tour with Patricia who made it a very worthwhile visit. She is a very proud Camanyan with incredible knowledge of Cayman and Pedro St James. She imparted her knowledge with good humour and was very warm and welcoming.
