Potamies

Starting from your hotel we head to “Potamies” an Authentic Cretan village.There we will make our first stop, in a traditional mitato where we will meet a local shepherd with his family. We will see how the cheese is made after first milking the milk from the goats and then we will learn how the flour is made in the traditional herromily. Those who wish can taste from the traditional products of the shepherd, such as cheese, raki and oil.

Sfendili the sunken village or the Cretan Atlantis Duration: 15 minutes

Then we will start our ascent using dirt roads, we will pass through the gorge Of “Ebassas”. The view of the imposing mountains and the wild beauty of nature will reward you. At the short stop, the guide will collect various local herbs (oregano, thyme, sage) as the Cretans used to do.

Windmills Of Lasithi Plateau

These stone structures fitted with white sails turned with the wind and drew water from the ground to irrigate the crops. During its heydays, Lasithi Plateau had over 10,000 windmills

Our next stop is on the Lassithi plateau where you will have free time for coffee or optionally to visit the impressive cave of Zeus (ticket to the cave not included).

Great tour, although the Zeus Cave was shut so we didn’t get to see it which was but disappointing. As an alternative we were taken to pottery place which was fun. Great guide and fab experience, highly recommend.

A fantastic day out with Mikel. An affable, engaging guide (not to mention probably the most positive person I’ve ever met—I dare you not to smile at him in return), he provided enthusiastic commentary on all the places we visited and included a few spontaneous surprises. The lunch was fresh and delicious and the sights exhilarating. Highly recommended.

Whole heartedly recommended!!

Originally booked for Tuesday 3rd September but during the previous night (Monday 2nd) I had a problem with my colostomy bag exploding during the night due to a minor bowel upset and I decided it wasn't safe to go – the Frixos Hotel Manager was very apologetic and helped us by cancelling the Tuesday pickup. We went back to the lady in the nearby kiosk where we'd booked it – she said she couldn't offer a refund but after a long conversation in Greek with Safari Experts we were offered the next day for half price, which I paid straight away as I thought that was very fair in the circumstances! Trip about 45–50 minutes late in arriving, but I didn't mind that as we were able to get the Full Hotel Breakfast (included in our stay!) first! Very friendly professional and very caring 58 year old driver who spoke to by name and did all he could to help me with steps and alighting to and from the vehicle at stops, and very knowledgeable as well! We visited a Family Farm and had a go at milking the goat Samantha, then a lovely off–road section as well between some of the small villages up in the hills, followed by the booked lunch at Arla Taverna in Krasi – I had the Pork Meal and my friend Steve had the Chicken Leg Meal, hot fresh and appetising service as well! In the afternoon there was a walk round Krassi Village with an excellent commentary description about how the ancient people got their drinking water and dealt with their laundry, then finally a trip to the Olive Oil Factory a few miles outside Malia, and then dropped off at the end of the small street just outside our Hotel Frixos door! I can whole–heartedly recommend Safari Experts, if you want to see some of Crete without the hassle of getting about and worrying about food for a day, pick one of their Full–Day Tours, you won't regret it! An excellent and amazing tour...led by our super knowledgeable guide Vaqelis. The opportunity is not to be missed. You see the real heart of Crete, by those who live there. Highly recommend and much better than a stuffy coach tour. The trek to the cave of Zeus is worth it...as long as you have suitable shoes. Resist the temptation of the donkey taxi! Lunch was lovely and views amazing...Memorable day!
