  • White Tower of Thessaloniki

The White Tower, the monument - symbol of Thessaloniki that dominates the port, was built in the late 15th - early 16th century and was the southeastern tower of its fortification. In its historical course it changed names and uses. Kalamaria Fortress, Janissary Tower and Blood Tower were some of them, the last two due to the use of the Tower as a prison for prisoners executed by the Janissaries and its face was stained with blood from the frequent executions. In 1890 a convict, in order to gain his freedom, whitewashed the tower with lime and since then its current name has remained, "White Tower".

    20 minutes

  • Arch of Galerius

The impressive 'Kamara', as it is called, is one of the most beloved and popular monuments for the people of Thessaloniki (and not only), as it is the meeting point of residents, students, visitors before starting their walk in the city located on Egnatia Street. It was built in memory of the victory of Galerius over the Persians between 295 - 305 AD. The relief decoration depicts the military battles and the victories of Galerius.

Brace yourself for an architectural marvel that exudes sheer power and prestige, while its interior walls adorned with mesmerizing mosaics transport you to a realm of unrivaled artistry. Behold the remarkable harmony that unfolds within the Rotunda, a testament to its ability to seamlessly blend the realms of both paganism and Christianity. • N/A

The Temple of God Wisdom, dedicated to Christ, the true Word and the Wisdom of God, was built in the late 7th century and is a typical example of a transitional cruciform church with a dome and a vestibule, in imitation of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. The beautiful frescoes of the 11th century and its mosaics are considered masterpieces of Byzantine art. During the Latin rule in Thessaloniki (1204-1224) the church became the cathedral of the Latins while after the restoration of Byzantine rule in the city it was again the Orthodox episcopal see of Thessaloniki until 1523/24, when it was converted into a mosque.

    20 minutes

  • Church of Saint Dimitrios - Patron of Thessaloniki

Dedicated to the patron saint of the city, the majestic Basilica of Agios Dimitrios, is one of the most important early Christian churches in Thessaloniki. It was originally built in the ruins of a Roman bath, in the place where, according to tradition, the Saint was imprisoned and martyred in 303. The first temple, a small shrine, was built in 313. The holy place of martyrdom, the Crypt, is located below the transverse aisle of the church and in the late Byzantine years was the center of the myrrh-washing of the Saint.

    30 minutes

  • The Greek Agora and Roman Forum

Prepare to be transported back in time to the vibrant heart of Roman Thessaloniki, where the Roman Agora reigned as a bustling hub of both social and religious significance. This architectural marvel, constructed in two distinct phases during the captivating era of the mid-2nd and mid-3rd centuries AD, stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Delve into the depths of the underground museum, where the fascinating story of the excavation unfolds before your eyes. Venture further south of the archaeological site, where a world of enchantment awaits. Explore the legendary 'Enchanted' ruins, known as las Incantadas, as they were affectionately called by the Spanish-Jewish community that once thrived in this very neighborhood. Prepare to embark on an unforgettable journey, where the Roman Agora and its surrounding wonders will ignite your curiosity and transport you to a realm where the past comes alive.

Excellent walking tour of Thessaloniki

Published on Jul, 2023

Barbara was an excellent guide and gave us wonderful explanations of the history of Thessaloniki. We left with a good understanding of its history along with great suggestions for additional activities and restaurants we should consider during our visit. I am glad that I wore good walking shoes because the tour was about 4 and a half hours. This tour is a must if you have never visited Thessaloniki and would like to understand itā€™s historiy.
