It was our first time visiting Spain, and we were excited to spend part of our time in the Rioja wine region. I wanted to find a private tour for my wife’s birthday to learn more about the wine region and culture. After doing some research, I discovered Rioja Like A Native and read all the wonderful reviews. I started communicating with Rebeca and from the first email, Rebeca’s suggestions and thoughtful answers to my questions really gave me confidence and trust in their tour company. Rebeca came up with a perfect plan for our tour of wineries. What followed was the perhaps one of the most unique and special days we have ever experienced!
We arranged to meet in Logrono where Roberto collected us at the designated meeting point at exactly the time he said he would be there! From the moment we met him, he treated us like family, had a fantastic sense of humor, and was extremely engaging; we could not have imagined a more interesting tour guide to spend the day with! On the way to the wineries, Roberto provided interesting anecdotes and plenty of background on the Rioja region and the towns and vineyards we passed. We first visited a modern winery. We were the only ones there, and learned about the machinery and barrel aging process, which made it a unique and informative experience. The host at the winery entertained all our questions and we had fun with a taste competition straight from the barrels! Next up, we visited a winery that still uses original cave aging methods, and it was fascinating seeing how they have adapted the old methods to modern times. The history of the area with all the caves was also intriguing. Roberto introduced us to the owner who happened to be there, and it was nice to briefly talk to him about his vineyards and the decision to buy more caves/stay with the old methods.
We ended our day at Rebeca and Roberto’s lovely home (scenery is spectacular) having traditional Spanish dishes (the food and wine pairing were delicious!). We also got to meet their beautiful pup [Taino]. Following the wonderful food, we joined other guests to explore the vines in an adjacent field and then do a blind wine tasting test, which was a lot of fun. Using the knowledge gained from the day, we were at least able to get most of the answers correct!
In summary, we had a truly unique experience. It was a fun day where we were immersed in the culture of Rioja and its namesake wine, which would not have been possible without Rioja Like A Native. The attention to detail and enthusiasm Rebeca and Roberto put into their company creates a tour that you most likely would not experience anywhere else! Thank you Roberto & Rebeca!
