Overview

(Not suitable for severe gluten intolerance or strict vegan/ vegetarian). A guided tour on Penang street foods, history and culture. Foods and drinks are included (except alcoholic drinks and durian) : 1. 3 hours walk, eat street foods in local cafes and learn history and cultures as we walk on the street. Skip lunch for better tour experience. 2. Taste 10-13 traditional Penang street foods and drinks. 3. Learn the ingredients and preparation of Penang dishes like Lor Bak, Wantan Mee, Assam Laksa, Char Koay Teow, Hokkien Mee, Curry Mee; drinks like nutmeg juice, ambra, barley, white coffee and desserts like Chendol, ABC or rojak. 4. Visit a Chinese temple to gain insight to Taoism and have your fortune told. 5. Savor local tropical fruits like water apple or mango, if available. 6. Savor local snacks like Malay cakes or Indian apom (crepe). 7. See heritage building architectures, fengshui and street art murals. Note: Inform guide if any food allergy or religious concern.

    Tour starts from this point (bus stop in front of 7-eleven Penang Road) where participants will come on their own - walking, by taxi or by Grab. Briefing will be done first at this location before tour starts.

Our tour guide James was wonderful. We visited a number of places pre-selected by James and tried the local delicacies. James also provided the historical context/background of the neighborhoods visited. The food was great and our tour guide’s knowledge and presentation made it even better.

My friend and I did this tour on our 2nd day in George Town. James was absolutely fantastic - he asked about allergies/intolerance ahead of time and asked if there were any dishes I'd like to try. He accommodated all of this in the tour - and we even had some amazing cakes that he'd gone to the market ahead of time to buy so we could try them. As well as the food we learnt loads about George Town and it's buildings and history. Couldn't recommend enough - definitely come hungry!
