  • Giraffe Centre

    The Giraffe Center is located in Lang'ata, approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) from the centre of Nairobi, Kenya. It was established in order to protect the endangered giraffe, that is found only in the grasslands of East Africa. In 1979, the Giraffe Center, a nature sanctuary for visiting and including wildlife conservation education for urban school children, was started by Jock Leslie Melville, the Kenyan grandson of a Scottish Earl, when he and his wife Betty captured two baby giraffe to start a programme of breeding giraffe on their Langata property, site of the present Centre. Since then the programme has had huge success, resulting in the introduction of several breeding pairs of Rothschild Giraffe into Kenyan national parks. By 1983 enough money had been raised to establish the Giraffe Visitor's Center as a tourist destination just outside Nairobi. The main attraction for both school children and visitors is feeding giraffes from a raised observation platform. The Giraffe Center is also home to several warthogs which freely roam the area along with the giraffes.

    This is the beautiful farmhouse where Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa, lived between 1914 and 1931, until she left Kenya after a series of personal tragedies.

A tour to remember

The tour with Alex my guide was the one to remember I did a lot of game drives in my life but never in my life have I spotted so many lions in my life… this is a trip to remember for the rest of my life. Feeding Giraffes was a very pleasant experience and I would recommend this company for any future tour you wish to do.

George is Great!

George was such a fantastic guide! He made sure we had a good breakfast and took us to Nairobi National Park early. He took care of all the park fees and advised us of the price so we could pay him later on. He seemed to know exactly where to go to find the animals and knew a lot of interesting facts! He showed us very close experiences of giraffe, zebra, lions (male and female), rhinos, impala, and several other creatures. We got tons of great pictures, and George was extremely kind and patient. I loved it and felt very comfortable as a lone female traveler. The only thing that was mildly confusing was George was not the first person to pick me up. Another gentleman came to get me before the tour with George and took me there. So, I would just advise asking specifically how they are going to pick a person up when you book it so it's clear and one can feel confident. I absolutely loved it, and it is 10,000% worth it! This is the best! Check out my pictures if you don't believe me!

A good way to spend a day in Nairobi

Nairobi National Park is an adequate quick safari, but the other places are the reason to go. A great visit to the elephant orphanage, the giraffe center and the Karen Blixen house. Remember to tip the guides at the center and the Blixen house.

Absolutely brilliant! Museum and guide there made a fascinating tour. Elephant rescue centre is inspiring , park well worth a visit , likewise giraffes . Alex is brilliant, knowledgeable, patient, never rushed , happy to pop back to my hotel when I forgot my phone !
