Overview

Take a city tour to the locations of your favourite television series and enter the Commissario Brunettiā€™s world, known from Donna Leon's novels and their film adaptations. Along the way you will learn a lot about Venice! The fictional character of the Venetian "Commissario Brunetti" has been a success figure for years: discover personally on site the the wonderful film scene locations from Donna Leon's novels. It is not at all easy to find the ā€œcamposā€ and ā€œpalazzosā€ where Brunetti is often on the way, because most of them are off the city highlights and well know touristic sites. On the contrary, the films are mainly shot in a rather off the beaten path Venice, like the Questura. It is so beautiful when you find the places you fancied on TV or reading the books, from Brunetti's first cases, such as "Acqua Alta", through ā€œBeastly thigsā€ or ā€œSuffer the little childrenā€, to the youngest, whereby Raffi and Chiara no longer want to live in Venice.

    We will start at the Brunetti's house door. The Brunetti family came and went through this front door, which every Brunetti fan can recognize, once you found it!

  • Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena

    The headquarters of the radical animal protection organization Angelo Animale are located in this palazzo. Two masked figures flee from the side entrance and chase each other with the Commissario and his colleagues. While one of the two escapes, the other is caught and, to Brunetti's amazement, turns out to be his daughter Chiara.

    in this bar Signora Gismondi, the neighbour of the unpopular Signora Battestini, enjoys the last two balls of chocolate ice cream of her life.

    After the Commissario has realized that his daughter is a member of the radical animal protection organization Angelo Animale, the two have a discussion in this pub. Due to the murder of Professor Nava, who was formerly employed in the slaughterhouse, Chiara's so-called animal angels are now the focus of the investigation.

    In this bar Vice-Questore Patta used to eat a couple of glasses of grappa too much in this bar. But Vianello also appreciates the bar because of the best cafƩ in town and the delicious croissants. The inspector treats himself to a panino prosciutto or a tramezzino with ham and artichoke with a glass of white wine

    This is where Signora Maria's kiosk is located. She is well informed about the residents of your neighborhood and shows Brunetti the way to the American archaeologist Brett Lynch straight away.

    The tour ends in a place that we cannot miss. We reach the striking columned hall in a campo, through which the employees, visitors or delinquents in the films hurry to the Questura with the famous green door and a portal

Visiting Brunettiā€™s Venice at Night

Our tour guide, Valerio, provided us with an outstanding visit to several of the sites referenced in the books and provided interesting background and tidbits on the site and its relationship to Brunetti. He helped us to really ā€œseeā€ Venice from the perspective of Brunettiā€™s Venice. He was thoroughly entertaining and provided a wealth of tidbits on Venice itself. Weā€™ve been to Venice several times and we really learned a lot of interesting facts. The sites we visited only encompassed a few of the books, but it was well worth it!

A great walking tour of Venice by a Venetian with Brunetti highlights

This was a great opportunity to walk the streets of Venice, away from most of the tourist spots and see where the locals walk, and eat and shop through the experience of local Venetian Valerio and Donna Leon's Police Commissioner Brunetti book sites. While walking we saw Brunetti's office, the State Police Station, his office view, the local patsticceria Rosa Salva where he stops for coffee, and the palatial home of his in-laws, now used for art shows and many more book sites. We learned about the history of many other Venice sites and the daily threat of the rising and falling water levels from the lagoon. A tour that should not be missed and one that can be done again and again as Valerio's endless knowledge of Venice is personal and current, so we will gladly book it on our next trip to Venice!

A different view of Venice

I spent last September on a two week art tour in Venice, and on this trip did a lot of art Biannale things, so my Donna Leon walking tour with Valerio showed me a different side of Venice. Itā€™s been a while since Iā€™ve read the books, and if you are a huge fan with places in them youā€™d like to see, mention those specifically. I just enjoyed various scenes from various books and Valerioā€™s enthusiasm.
