Overview

There is no experience more authentically Icelandic than hiking through the surreal landscapes of the highlands followed by a relaxing soak in a geothermal pool. The Canyon Baths The Húsafell locals who undertook the Canyon Baths project went to great lengths to keep the entire structure as environmentally unobtrusive, sustainable and true to the area’s heritage as possible. Choose from two geothermal pools of varying temperatures, 30-41°C (86-105°F), plus a cold-water spring at 10°C (50°F), each with a spectacular view of the surrounding canyon, mountains and glaciers. Led by a knowledgeable local guide in English, this year-round tour begins with a short ride from the Húsafell Activity Centre to the trailhead in the remote Icelandic Highlands. On this 2-hour tour we enjoy a relaxed walk among natural wonders not found in many guidebooks, including the spectacular two-tiered waterfall Langifoss.

Led by a knowledgeable local guide in English, this year-round tour begins with a short ride from the Húsafell Activity Centre to the trailhead in the remote Icelandic Highlands. On this 2-hour tour we enjoy a relaxed walk among natural wonders not found in many guidebooks, including the spectacular two-tiered waterfall Langifoss. We’ll also learn about Iceland’s renewable energy practices, cross an icy stream of glacial meltwater and see the site to Okjökull, Iceland’s first glacier claimed by climate change. Note that the route can change due to unforeseen weather circumstances such as snow, ice, mud or water. The highlight of our excursion is a serene soak in the Húsafell Canyon Baths, a surreal hot spring paradise that has to be seen to be believed. Enjoy half an hour of relaxing, recharging and breathing in the pure Icelandic air before heading back to Hotel Húsafell.

Glacier/Volcano Baths

Anna is amazing!! She was our guide for the baths and elevated an already amazing experience. Walking down into the canyon is stunning. Then once in the pools it’s just a different experience. Anna explained that the sulfur (egg smell) was not present as these baths are glacier water that has been heated by the nearby volcano. How cool to be soaking in volcano heated glacier water.

Exceptional experience in every way. The timing was precise (no waiting around), Olgeir the guide was helpful, welcoming and knowledgeable, and the canyon baths were a once in a lifetime experience that was quintessentially Icelandic in every way. We went in the winter which had to be the absolute best time to go. Soaking in the warmth of the thermal bath surrounded by snow covered cliffs on every side is the stuff of Christmas movies, but I cannot imagine there is a bad time of year to go. Some reviewers complained about the price and the restrictions (you can’t just go to the baths on your own - you must purchase the tour) - but for newcomers with limited time and no local expertise the cost was well worth the convenience of being “guided” to and from the canyon. Absolute don’t miss. A hidden gem.

Spectacular experience

Cannot even describe how truly extraordinary this experience rates. The guide is friendly and knowledgeable and the setting is unbelievable even in 20 degree temps. There was one other couple and us so it was like our own private hidden hot spring/bath. If you are looking for luxury go to the other baths but if you are looking for an experience with nature this is the place to be . Would do it again in a heartbeat!

One of the highlights of my trip. Had the canyon baths all to myself. The place is serene and quiet. My guide was Olgeir Helgi Ragnarsson; he was very kind and accommodating. He took a pictures of me, and provided towels. I enjoyed the privacy and the views. Will definitely do this again if ever I go back to Iceland.
