Hue boasts what is said to be the largest food market in Vietnam, such is the popularity of the local cuisine. This is what attracted us to visit. Despite being experienced and adventurous cooks at home in England, we did’t recognise many of the fruit and vegetables in the market. We sought out a local guide and were delighted to meet and spend time with the charming My Anh. Having learned to cook as a child with his mother, he perfected his skills over many years working as a chef in restaurants in Hue. Now, his cookery school offers a bespoke service in which you shop, cook and eat a delicious four course meal. Imagine having your own private chef who takes you under his wing, patiently guiding you on what to buy and how to prepare and eat authentic meals. Food in Hue is distinct from that in the north and south of Vietnam. It features lemongrass for example. Mr Anh is an excellent teacher. He is passionate about food, speaks good English and we will definitely take part in another of his wonderful, small group classes when we return. Strongly recommended.
