  • St. James Parish Church

St.James Parish Church is among the four oldest surviving churches in Barbados and is located near the site of the island's first settlement in Holetown. When English settlers reached the island 1627 one of their first priorities was to establish a place of worship. A wooden church was erected on this site in 1628, making this the oldest piece of consecrated land in Barbados. This wooden church was replaced by a coral-stone building 60 years later, and much of that structure remains today. Two of the the impressive features of this historic church are its mural tablets and stained glass windows. In the northern porch of the church is a bell with the inscription - "God bless King William, 1696". This bell pre-dates the famous American Liberty bell by 56 years. It was cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, which also manufactured the Liberty Bell and the Great Bell of Big Ben. In the burial ground are some of the oldest graves on the island.

  • Nidhe Israel Synagogue and Museum

Nidhe Israel Synagogue, the ‘Synagogue of the Scattered of Israel’, is one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere. It was developed by Sephardic Jewish settlers that arrived in Barbados from Recife, Brazil around 1628, soon after English settlement of the island in 1627. The building originally covered an area of approximately 2,000 square feet and held about 300 people. The synagogue was damaged in the 1831 hurricane, but subsequently was rebuilt on the same site in 1833. The Sephardic community was orthodox. The men worshipped separately on the lower level and the women used the upstairs gallery. After the synagogue was rebuilt by 1834, the number of Jewish residents in Barbados began to dwindle. Many of them migrated to the United States and the United Kingdom where they started other Jewish communities, especially in New England.

MUST DO

Published on Feb, 2025

We booked this on Viator and were initially worried because of some bad reviews. Let me tell you, JULIEN was amazing. He literally everybody and everything about everything. He talked to the whole ride, telling us all kinds of fun information about Barbados, including how they got rid of snakes. We had planned where we were going prior and even helped us plan a nice lunch where OUTERBANKS was filmed. We got to feed the monkeys at the wildlife reserve because of him and his connections. Normally you cannot feed them. My only tip for anyone taking his tour is bring something to drink so you aren’t parched.

A lot of beautiful views

Published on Jan, 2025

We were able to squeezes lot of things into the day trip. The driver was friendly and knowledgeable sharing a lot of information about the island with us. It was over the winter holidays so some things were closed but he still ensured we got our money worth and saw the whole island. We got a lot of great pictures and felt we saw the entire island in the trip! Would recommend

Barbados island tour extraordinaire

Published on Jan, 2025

Jason MacDaddy is an exceptional tour guide and driver. He showed us parts of Barbados we would not have otherwise seen. He explained local customs and the history of the island. Jason is affable, professional and knowledgeable. We highly recommend him for an excellent island tour.

Great experience and fun filled day.

Published on Jan, 2025

I thoroughly enjoyed the excursions but they would not be amazing without our private tour guide Sylwin. He is very knowledgeable, warm and polite and humorous. He went above and beyond to make sure that our excursions were complete. The day was a filled packed day and most excursions were completed but he came for us to conclude the excursion the day. Sylwin you are the best!

Julian is very...

Published on Jan, 2025

Julian is very knowledgeable of the island and gave us the full tour. Saw the sights and he even made contact with the pharmacy to help relieve some irritation my daughter was having. Great experience, we highly recommend.
