Overview

this is one of the closest ways to experience what the Wright Brother's experienced over 100 years ago as they trying to conquer the mystery of flight ... and only a few miles away from where they actually took their first flights!

Meeting points

Park at Jockey's Ridge State Park main parking lot. The Hang Gliding School is located to the left of the visitor center.

End point

This activity ends back at the meeting point.

Itinerary

Your lesson will begin with "Ground School", which is a 30 minute interactive introductory class. Once you have completed your Ground School class, you will have a short period to collect your things, use the bathroom and gear up for the flight portion of your lesson. Each student will receive a helmet and harness, which they will carry out to the sand dunes. After gearing up, the entire class will walk out to Jockey's Ridge for the flight portion of your lesson. Each student shall receive 5 training flights per person over the next 2 hours. Once we have completed each student's flights, we will all return to the Hang Gliding School to wrap up and review what you've learned during your lesson. NOTE: weight limit for this activity is 235 lbs

Awesome first hang gliding experience

First flight ever, the glider was so much more comfortable than I thought it would be, and the instructors gave real time advice as they guided down, in 5 glides there was so much improvement! Also, typically the glider is carried uphill for you, but I got to try it, very empowering. Recommended for anyone who has never tried it before!

We had a great time! Michael and Josh were very informative and lead us "ole timers" through the procedure step-by-step. Would definitely do this again!

We were unsure if we wanted to give this a try but after stopping in and being reassured we knew we were in!! The lesson gave us the knowledge base to have a successful and fun filled day! All the guys, L & C & G were the best!! They were kind and patient and very good instructors! Legs gave us a demo after our walk out onto the dunes, the we practiced the 5 sets of directions while hooked in before we did anything in the air. Each person did 2 flights, twice and then a final flight. Amazing!!!! The guys gave each of us tips after each flight - love immediate feedback! Everyone in our group participated barefooted. Glad we brought water out with us. ( they had a water filling station in the office) Felt very safe, secure and confident!! A down side…..can’t come up with one thing!!

This beginner lesson was a great end of week afternoon activity. You arrive and sign waivers and it is followed up with instruction. All instructors are great, patient, and are there every step of the way literally. You are fitted for gear and then hike out on a boardwalk to a spot to remove your shoes. Prepare to foot it through sand to a high point on the sand dunes to put your instruction to the test for 5 flights. It is so much fun! It was a pretty sunny day and great views! Bring water and quick snack or purchase onsite. You hike it back to collect your “i flew” badge of honor and hang gliding pass to return. We will be back!

Great instructors with small groups. We were there during Hurricane Debby, so our lesson was cut a little short. Who cares! We had a BLAST! I have so much more respect for the Wright Brothers caring that plane up the hill!
