Join our guided tours and learn about the making of movie effects, from armour to weapons, creatures to costumes, make-up to miniatures, and more!

Meet your guide at the Wētā Cave store to begin your journey through the movie-magic world of Wētā Workshop! Explore props, costumes, and cool stuff From The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to Avatar andDistrict 9: learn about props, costumes and creatures created for your favourite films. Interact with cool stuff from our creative departments and catch an artist at work on our tour stage. Enter our world of miniatures and modelmaking Discover the filmmaking technique of miniature effects and learn how they are built for hit TV and film productions. Wander through monumental miniatures from Thunderbirds Are Go and see how we fit an entire island, cityscape and mansion under one roof!

Amazing Talent, Enthusiasm & a Must Do

I had a fabulous time, I took the shuttle bus driven by a driver who was keen to show us some places along the way & stop for photos. We entered through the gift shop & had a bit of time before the beginning of our tour. Mia was a very enthusiastic hostess and it was her joy to share the information with us & answer our questions. I completely enjoyed the tour & the highlight for me was Kim Beaton showing her tin foil creations that lead to some amazing finished products. Kim's enthusiasm for her craft filled the room. I would highly recommend this tour & next time I travel to NZ I won't overlook the Auckland workshop. It was very good value for quite a few hours.

It's excellent. The tour guide explains very well the process and how the company started. You even get some hands on with the swords and making something creative. Super fun!

The tour was a great look into what goes on behind the scenes at Weta Workshop. James was very k knowledgeable and helpful. There was one thing he wasn't sure about and the entire staff had a great time figuring it out to get me the answer. Fantastic experience!

Must see for movie fans!

I knew they were responsible for many of the costumes & special effects for the Lord of the Rings, but was not aware that they also have supported over 100 other movies & shows. If you’re a movie fan then this is a must see activity. Note: they wouldn’t allow picture taking for the first 1/2 of the tour but we had plenty of things to see and things to take pictures of so bring your camera or smartphone with you.

This was a brilliant experience. The tour guide was great and full of knowledge. We even got to talk with some of the model creators. This is a MUST if you are interesting in behind the scenes for films or Lord of the Rings.
