Overview

Live a day as a researcher with the scientists of MareTerra NGO. All your curiosities about dolphins will be satisfied. Observe the researchers as they collect scientific data to study the bottlenose dolphin population of the Gulf of Alghero. Discover the stories of some of the most famous dolphins like Suzeo, Taz or Shark Junior. During snorkelling, you'll have a guide who will take you to discover underwater life. On board, we'll tell you some curiosities about what we have seen. You will never be alone! Our excursions are inspired by the principles of ecotourism and sustainability: - Latest generation boat engines reduce fuel consumption and reduce the emission of noise underwater. - HQWW certification (High Quality Whale Watching) for whale watching operators complying with the Code of Good Conduct. This serves to reduce and minimize the disturbance of cetaceans. - Environmental education on board. - By joining Progetto Natura, you can support MareTerra NGO and its scientific research and conservation projects.

Meeting points

The meeting point at 9:45 am is located along the "Lungomare Barcellona" promenade along "Via Giuseppe Garibaldi" near the "Banchina Rafael Catardi". A member of our crew will wait for you in front of the CicloExpress bicycle rental. If you have a car, parking at the port behind the CicloExpress is free of charge.

Itinerary

If you are a sea lover don't let the less warm temperature stop your curiosity! For three hours, we search for dolphins. Thanks to the presence of the researcher of MareTerra NGO, our chance of spotting dolphins is 80%. During the navigation, a briefing will be provided to let you know more about the biology and behaviour of dolphins, along with their conservation status. We are certified with the High Quality Whale Watching certification. Once we sighted a group of dolphins, we respect their well-being approaching them in accordance with the "good code of conduct" of our certification to minimise the risk of any disturbance to dolphins. Thanks to the photo-identification technique, we can recognise dolphins by their dorsal fins and we are able to tell you their names, how old they are and their health status. In addition, you will listen to the dolphin sounds thanks to the recordings that the scientists of MareTerra NGO collected to study the bioacoustic of the dolphins. During the navigation, you will admire one of the most beautiful coasts of Sardinia, within the boundaries of the Marine Protected Area Capo Caccia - Isola Piana.

  • Suitable sea conditions and a minimum number of people are required for this experience. In case of cancellation, you will be able to choose another date if available or a full refund. Other causes that may occasionally lead to cancellation of the tour are mechanical failures, health problems and requests for monitoring intervention for the protection of cetaceans that cannot be postponed and conflict with the date of the tour.
  • The guides reserve the right to end the excursion early if it is not possible to guarantee the safety of the people on board or to respect the established program due to weather and sea conditions. The cost of the ticket could be reduced in case of early termination of the excursion.

Wonderful

We just came back from the 3 hour trip with Fabio and the team. I'd highly recommend this, not just as a great experience, but also as a vital learning and reminder of ourselves and the natural world we are all part of. Lauren was excellent at presenting all sorts of important facts and anecdotes, with a clear passion. The work they do is fully funded only by these excursions so, personally I'll also donate separately. Much of the trip is heading out into the bay which is stunning in itself. Whilst there's a high chance of seeing dolphins there's absolutely no guarantee of it. Today we were resigned that we wouldn't, but were then lucky when a couple of females, each with their young, appeared. Thanks again to the team. To anyone else reading this, please do go and support them.

Nice discovery with the kids

We had a very nice moment on the boat with the kids! Fabio explained us a lot about the dolphins in Alghero and we had the chance to see some of them close from the boat! The views are also very nice from the boat.

What a wonderful tour! Fabrizio and the team are really passionate and knowledgeable not only about dolphins, but sustainable tourism as well. I really, really liked how they respected the animals so much. I learned a lot, and I loved seeing the dolphins. I would highly recommend them, and I would take their tour again!

Amazing trip. The 3 tour guides were so friendly and informative and cleared showed a passion for dolphins and their conservation. We saw a pod of 11 beautiful dolphins of which one was a calf. An exemplary organisation with an ethical, conservational approach to the work they do and this translated well to the tourist.
