Overview

Admire the legendary Northern Lights immersed in a wild and pristine environment, and learn to photograph them like a true professional! Our approach sets aside the comforts of resorts in favor of a more authentic experience, in close contact with the cold and hostile Arctic environment. Don't worry: we will provide you with everything you need to face the extreme temperatures safely. Years of field experience allow us to spot the Auroras even on the most challenging nights. Admiring the legendary Northern Lights is not as simple as one might think. They are often difficult to see, or the view is obscured by bad weather. You won't have to worry about any of this during our tours: with us, you will maximize your chances of seeing them. Additionally, we are professional photographers specializing in night photography, so we can ensure that the photos you take home will be absolutely incredible.

Itinerary

The meeting point is where the adventure begins. From there, we will make a last-minute decision on where to go based on the weather conditions to find the perfect spot to admire the Aurora. The hunt for the Aurora can vary greatly in duration due to its highly unpredictable nature as a natural phenomenon. Sometimes the Lights can be spotted immediately at the beginning of the tour, while other times it requires driving for hours to find the ideal conditions to observe them. Each hunt is unique and different from the others, requiring patience, a spirit of adventure, and the ability to improvise. Be prepared for the possibility of a true chase for the Aurora: when dealing with Mother Nature, any prediction is impossible. But it is precisely these reasons that make this activity a real adventure! When we have found the ideal location, we will set up the area with a bonfire, provide thermal equipment, and focus on admiring and photographing the legendary Northern Lights.

Awesome Hunt

Weather didn't look so good however, our guides made the experience great and made sure to get us to a spot that we were able to see the lights even though activity looked low. Was a amazing trip all in all.

An unforgettable night

This was a most incredible experience! We had arrived in Alta a few days prior to our tour. It was unseasonably warm and cloudy. We searched for the lights a few nights on our own before we had our scheduled tour and no luck. The day of our tour, the guide contacted us and shared how it was not ideal weather conditions and asked if we wanted to reschedule. We were leaving the next day so we could not do so. Our guide Andrea said he would be persistent and if there were lights to be found, he would. And he was right!!! He knew where we should head to find clearer skies and we saw the most amazing lights show. It was truly an unforgettable experience. Andrea made it an intimate and special night for our family. He brought homemade soup and hot chocolate that were delicious! And some tasty cookies too. We loved getting to know Andrea during our tour and I can truly say he went out of his way to make it a great night for us!

We had a wonderful show tonight. The northern lights were amazing. Andrea and Winua were very kind and are prfessinal photographers. They promised they will send us the pictures and that we should enjoy the lights. They were very open and kind for all what we asked. We had also tea and cookies. Andrea was only worried about what will be if the northern lights wo't appear..We told him that we totaly understand that it could happen and that he doesnot have to worry. Even the road south to the direction on clear sky was interesting. I highly recommand this tour

Best Aurora Experience with Professionals

Andrea and Milvia were excellent guides and photographers! They put in a lot of consideration into choosing the perfect site to wait (yes, we were well educated on how the best way to spot an aurora is to stay put and have patience in spades!). We settled down on this beautiful frozen lake which turned out to be the most amazing backdrop for the lights. They were also very well prepared for the very cold harsh conditions and went out of the way to make sure we were as comfortable as we could be. They had thermal suits, wood for a bonfire, hot drinks/soup and plenty of good conversation to fill up the hours. We were very lucky to get a phenomenal show that night and both Andrea and Milvia were on hand to capture all that beauty without us having to worry about getting that perfect shot. We could focus on just enjoying the majesty of the moment. They sent us the photos within a couple of days - the perfect souvenir!

Proposal made extra special with the epic hunt!

Was initially apprehensive booking these guys as they had no reviews. However, it turned out to be my now fiancée’s and my best night ever! The company is a two man operation run by the co-founders Andrea and Mirko. Andrea, who I was in contact with since my booking was super helpful in trying to find the best night for me to propose to my girlfriend under the northern lights. I originally had a different day booked but Andrea was in constant contact updating me on the forecast and was able to move my booking 2 days forward to increase my chances. On the day of the hunt, we were guided by Mirko, who has 6 years experience as a tour guide hunting the northern lights at other companies. Mirko was not only knowledge about the lights but was also able to give us tidbits on the starts and planets that were visible on the night. Unlike other companies who just take you to known spots, Mirko was an avid chaser who was dynamically adapting our route for the best chances to catch the lights by constantly analysing the weather and solar activity as the night went on. Another reason I chose these guys was that they are willing to hunt up to 2am with a 6pm start. This means it gives us a 8 hour window to see the lights. This was a huge plus compared to the 3.5 hours that our hotel tour guide offered us. Another big reason I chose Arctic Altaernative Tours is that both Mirko and Andrea are professional photographers. The pictures Mirko took on the night of my fiancée and I are truly beautiful. If the private tour is too pricy for you, they also do group tours, which I believe won’t be more than 6-8 people max. Overall I would highly recommend these guys.
