Yamanaka-kei is located at the southeastern edge of Hannan City and is mostly mountainous except for the villages around the road that runs along the Yamanaka River in the center of the area. The road was considered important from ancient times as the shortest route between Kyoto and the national capital of Kii Province, because the national capital was just a short distance away when crossing the Onoyama Pass to the south.
