Itinerary

Start your experience with a pickup at your centrally located Budapest hotel, and drive to the Etyek-Buda wine region, about 30 minutes away. Admire the vine-coated hills as you approach the town of Etyek, the hub of this relatively young wine industry that started when German settlers planted vines here around 200 years ago. Hear about Etyek’s famous fresh and crisp white wines, typically grown from pinot gris and sauvignon blanc grapes, and its celebrated sparkling Törley wine. Then, visit Old Wine Hill where nearly 1,000 mostly disused wine cellars sprinkle the slopes. Enjoy the views over the vineyards, public grape presses and villages below as your guide explains more about the local soils and acidities. Visit small, family-run wineries and sample four wines in each, along with tasty Hungarian snacks. In the morning tour you will get to see two wineries and in the longer afternoon tour you will visit 3 wineries. As you sip, learn local winemaking secrets from your friendly host — usually the winery owner and winemaker rolled into one. Discuss each wine with the host and get a truly personal take on each variety you’re tasting. You’ll leave with a really intimate understanding of the traditions, peoples and countryside that make the wines here so special. Afterward, enjoy a delicious 2-course dinner at a wine estate. If it’s summer, dine outside, or if it's winter, sit down at a table inside a cellar. Savor the classic Hungarian dishes and discuss your wine discoveries as you eat, perhaps enjoying some wine (own expense) with your food. See the Itinerary for a sample menu. Lastly, drive back to Budapest where a hotel drop-off marks the end of your tour.

They tour operator was very knowledgeable and provided great insight into the wine region and their processes. It was carefully curated to focus on the best of local wine producers in each of the establishments were very welcoming and charming. I had a wonderful time and I would recommend it to anyone. I’ve been on several wine tasting tours before and this was one of my favorites. Also, I did not go during peak season and it’s common that were operators canceled tours however, this tour operator did not and proceeded to take our small group despite this.

Go and see the countryside

Our guide (Peter) picked us promptly from the hotel. 30 mins later we were in the fabulous countryside. Experienced some good wines with a small group, followed by a superb lunch of Venison. A grand day out, go and do this. You will not be disappointed.

If you want to go and have a look outside of Budapest this is for you. I think we were really lucky finding this gem. Our guide (Peter) picked us up from the hotel, we were a small group and got on well. Firstly we went for about a 30 min ride to a small independent Winery, with some outstanding wines to sample. Then on to a fabulous lunch at another where the conversation flowed. A shame to leave…

Terrific short trip outside Budapest to the countryside to visit a region full of small family wineries. We enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about Hungarian wines, eat excellent fresh food, and meet the people who made it all.Small win

This experience is a 5 out of 5! All 3 places we went were small but amazing. They gave us history on the area and each vineyard. I would highly recommend doing this trip. It was a great way to get out of the city and see the countryside.
