Overview

All of the features of the History Tour plus more! Here we explore the wider city and uncover some hidden gems. Learn about the ‘King in the North’ - the legendary St. Oswald - who returned from exile to reclaim his father's Northumbrian lands and establish a legacy that paved the way for Cuthbert and the Durham story. We also take a look at the dark side of Durham as we explore the prisons, executions and hauntings that add to the mystery and intrigue of the city. Finally, a tour of Durham would not be complete without delving into its rich coal mining heritage and the local people who are at the heart of the Durham story.

Fab full city tour.... The best mix of history, myth, legend and local custom. Peter was very entertaining and informed and gave us tips on how to get the best from the rest of our trip. This was a delightful way to get oriented in this wonderful city.

An interesting and informative tour

The must do tour of Durham!

Published on Sep, 2024

We found this tour quite by accident but were convinced by the description and reviews. They didn't lie - in the two hours we walked around Durham our guide Peter almost always had an interesting fact to give about the view and the buildings. You'll get an overview of the well known and less well known spots in Durham and quite the history lesson of Durham in all of its fascinating (and gruesome) aspects. Peter is also a well of recommendations, if you are still planning where to eat and what to visit.

If you do one thing in Durham, make it this tour

Can’t recommend highly enough. Learned so much about Durham past and present. Coincided with Uni open day which possibly resulted in a few more stories. Now know the meaning behind money for old rope and going for a burton! Make sure you wear comfy shoes, it’s hilly and lots of cobbles.
