Overview

Discover the vibrant charms of Kagoshima by crafting with upcycled materials abundant in history and cultural significance. From luxurious Ōshima Tsumugi and to locally produced cotton and soft, sustainably dyed Kurobuta leather—you’ll be able to work with some of the things that give Kagoshima Prefecture its diverse and alluring culture. With a variety of options, you’ll find the perfect workshop to suit your interests. Your host, a former curator, will guide you step-by-step with easy to follow instructions. Travelers and locals alike will also enjoy learning more about Japan’s oldest prefecture over green or black craft tea. We have plenty of stories, historical trivia, and can’t miss recommendations that we're excited to share with you! In collaboration with a non-profit organization, our proceeds also benefit disabled members of the community. Please ask us for more details! Itinerary

Discover the vibrant charms of Kagoshima as you learn a 200-year old crafting technique to create a lovely souvenir of Japan. Originating in the Edo-period, tsumami-zaiku is a classical handcraft where small pieces of cut fabric are arranged together to create elaborate floral motifs. It’s hard to believe that no sewing is involved at all! Commonly used by Geiko and Maiko to adorn their hair and attire, this traditional art perfectly encapsulates the essence of Japanese beauty and design. You can use your finished product as a hairpin, pocket square, or more! While tsumami-zaiku is not unique to Kagoshima, in this two hour workshop you will also get the rare opportunity to work with Oshima Tsumugi, a luxurious and upscale silk originating from our very own Amami Island. Widely known for the intricate weaving and unique dying methods used in its construction, it has a deep cultural significance to the people of Kagoshima. Enjoy exquisite craft teas from the local regions of Chiran, etc. and light snacks while you channel your inner artisan!

An Absolute Oasis of Peace

One of the absolute best experiences I’ve ever had on my many trips to Japan. Stephanie is one of the realest, most thoughtful, validating humans on the face of the earth. The owner is also a supreme girl boss, running not only this shop but also a business that helps women and neurodivergent people find work and meaning. Sako-san, the tsumami teacher, is also a gem and a sweetheart, very clear with her instructions and helpful during the workshop! Taking this class is not just about engaging with an art form—it’s about connecting with a super node of power women doing incredibly soulful, beautiful work. Run, don’t walk!

My wife and I did a workshop here and were overwhelmed by the kindness and enthusiasm of the ladies. They are obviously passionate about sharing traditional Japanese crafts and providing an enjoyable experience. Depending on which building entrance you come to it may look like you have come to the wrong place, don't be put off, go inside and find the workshop. Although a small space this activity is definitely wheelchair accessible.

Great craft workshop!

The class was really good. It was run in both Japanese and English, and you had a choice of things to craft! The host was very engaging, with an introduction and a short fun quiz during the break! Snacks and tea were also provided. I was very pleased with what I made and took it home with me to wear! I also appreciated the ethics and mission behind the organisation, using local materials and traditional crafts to help reach a wider audience! Would recommend!
