Overview

Patmos ‑ a significant connection with the Byzantine Period and whose Christianity has still strongly preserved the Byzantine presence by the monastery and churches. Here, in a cave, St. John wrote the masterpiece of “Apocalypse” ‑ one of the most magnificent texts of world literature. The harbour town of Skala is dominated by the mighty monastery of the 'Theologian', built in the 11th cent., with its priceless religious relics, rare manuscripts, icons, jewellery, embroidery and its wealthy library constituted it as one of the richest monasteries within Christianity. The narrow lanes with the typical white painted houses, the innumerable taverns and the medieval town of Hora with splendid architectural patterns, the people's lifestyle and hospitality ‑ all this creates for you an unforgettable stay on Patmos.

    The Cave of the Apocalypse is situated about halfway up the mountain on the Aegean island of Patmos, along the road between the villages of Chora and Skala. This grotto is believed to mark the spot where John of Patmos received his visions that he recorded in the Book of Revelation.

    The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian is a Greek Orthodox monastery founded in 1088 in Chora on the island of Patmos. UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage site. It is named after St. John of Patmos.

    Chora Village Patmos: Chora is the capital of Patmos lying in the south central part of the island and a few km south of Skala, the main port of Patmos. The traditional settlement is built around the imposing Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, during the 12th century. Chora flourished between the 16th and 17th century during which beautiful mansions and captain residences were built from the wealthy families of that time.

A good guide makes the difference

Our guide - Vera (I hope I did not misspell her name) made it ! Her presentations, in both the museum of the monastery and in the cave were a mix of a professor of history and religion, a philosopher and an actress! At least for me, she was the best guide I ever had (and I am a senior and professor at a university). Congratulations!

Amazing experience - highly recommend

Simply amazing experience being inside the cave where St John wrote the Book of Revelation, seeing the place where he lived till he died and the rock standing 'desk' where said the vision to his disciple (scribe). Make sure you carry cash because tickets to the cave nor the monastery are included in the tour tickets which is disappointing as we were led to believe when ordering the tour.

Ozan was an amazing guide! With extra time, he took us to a Turkish Carpet Weaving operation where we were treated as royalty and enjoyed a tradition lunch on the lawn (not street food), a carpet explanation and show complete with tea service and a demonstration of the silk cocoon being made into thread. This was in addition to the wonderful sites of Eohesus and St Mary's house.
